p.1

This provision is good

 Managers and staff effectively monitor the progress of individual and groups of children. This helps them to act swiftly to close gaps in learning and to ensure all children develop well across the areas of learning.  Staff provide exciting and stimulating activities that motivate children to join in and learn. All children, including those who have additional needs, make good progress from their starting points.  Partnerships with parents, schools and other professionals are well established. Staff ensure parents are well informed about their children's progress and know how to support learning at home.  Children are happy, content and show a good sense of security. Staff are kind and welcoming. They effectively support children's emotional well-being and are good role models.  Managers have high expectations for maintaining good outcomes for children. They successfully identify areas for improvement through accurate self-evaluation.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, staff do not give children enough time to formulate their thoughts and ideas, particularly when responding to questions.  Staff do not extend fully children's understanding and use of numbers and counting skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 allow children more time to think and respond to questions, and to express their thoughts and ideas  extend opportunities for children to develop a broader understanding of early mathematics.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities inside and outside, and assessed the quality of teaching.  The inspector talked to the children and held discussions with staff at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector held meetings with the manager and director. She looked at relevant documentation, such as children's records, self-evaluation, policies and procedures, and evidence of the suitability of staff working at the nursery.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the manager and discussed the outcomes of an activity with her.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The manager and staff are fully aware of the signs that may indicate a child being at risk of harm and the procedures for raising any concerns. Staff supervise children effectively. They follow clear procedures to maintain a safe and secure environment. There are robust recruitment procedures to check that new staff are suitable to work with children. Managers regularly meet staff to review and support their practice, and to identify any training needs. Staff benefit from training to strengthen their professional knowledge and teaching skills. The manager seeks the views of the staff, parents and children to help decide on aspects of the provision to develop further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff have a good knowledge of how children learn and develop. They know how to engage children through their interests. Staff carry out observations of children's play routinely and assess their development. Children have lots of opportunity to explore and lead their own play. Staff encourage them to become independent and inquisitive learners. Children listen attentively and they happily participate in group activities. Staff encourage younger children to explore and investigate their surroundings. For example, they enthusiastically access a wide range of sensory materials and objects. Older children are excited when challenged to build an obstacle course outdoors. Staff are skilled at encouraging children to develop their own creative designs. For example, children make pictures with a variety of interesting materials and are free to express themselves.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff support children's health well. Children spend time outdoors and enjoy being physically active. For example, they enjoy pretend cooking in the outdoor kitchen. They delight in making cakes with mud. Food on offer is healthy and nutritious, and staff encourage good manners. For example, they sit with the children during mealtimes and help to encourage social and independence skills. Children are well behaved. Staff teach them to be polite and helpful. For example, staff award them stickers for their efforts, which children wear with pride. Children settle quickly and form secure attachments for staff and friendships with others. Staff encourage children's positive attitudes towards others well. They learn about and appreciate differences between themselves and others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children are active and enthusiastic learners. Those learning to speak English as an additional language, and children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, receive a good range of support to help them quickly catch up. Overall, children learn a range of skills to help them prepare for the next stage in their learning. For example, they make marks with different tools, recognise letters and learn to write their names.
