assess what works well and where she needs to improve.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not extend young children's interest to explore music and sing, to enhance their learning opportunities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 make better use of opportunities to explore music and singing to enhance further children's learning and development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder with the children and spoke with her about their learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection regarding her practice, and the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning.  The inspector reviewed the childminder's self-evaluation processes and discussed an observation of an activity.  The inspector checked the documentation the childminder uses to support her practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection procedures. She knows how to report any concerns she may have about a child's welfare. The childminder is well organised, she maintains the required documentation and uses these to underpin her practice. The childminder monitors children's progress well, for example through frequent observations, to plan their next steps in learning. The childminder establishes good relationships with parents. She gets to know the individual needs of children and their families well, and keeps them informed of their children's progress. Parental comments indicate they are very happy with the care their children receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy their time with the childminder and she supports their learning well overall. Children are motivated to learn, for example, through well-planned activities suitable for their age and stage of development. Children have good fun exploring and investigating using their senses. For example, they feel the different texture of rice and peas, and develop their physical skills when they fill up different sized containers. The childminder supports children's communication and language well. For example, she models vocabulary effectively and encourages children to repeat words. Children develop their early reading skills; for example, they enjoy looking at books and are fascinated when the childminder introduces puppets to the stories.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a warm, welcoming and secure environment. Children's behaviour is consistently good. The childminder provides lots of praise and encouragement during activities and throughout the day, which helps to develop children's self-esteem and confidence. The childminder teaches children from an early age about good independence. For example, they are able to feed themselves and find their own beakers when they want a drink. The childminder provides children with daily opportunities to be outside in the fresh air. For example, they visit local parks or woods to enable them to run around and be physically active.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age in all areas of learning. They develop their social skills well. For example, when visiting toddler groups, they play and learn how to behave positively with other children. They have good levels of concentration, and learn about numbers and counting during play. Children develop a range of skills, which helps to prepare them for their future learning and move to school.
