This provision is good

 The childminder is extremely effective in supporting children to feel included and valued. For example, when children join in with activities she warmly welcomes them, makes sure they can participate fully and encourages the other children to help them.  The childminder has a really enthusiastic manner with the children. She ensures there is a good pace to games, so that children enjoy themselves. The children thoroughly immerse themselves in games and ask to repeat them because they are having so much fun.  The childminder has developed a simple and effective system to check on children's progress in their learning. She carefully observes what children can do. She is very specific about when children have completed certain skills, so that she can quickly see if they are falling behind or whether they are achieving above their expected stage of development.  The childminder and her assistant consistently maintain careful supervision of the

children to promote their safety. They skilfully balance this with giving older children independence to complete tasks, such as taking care of some of their own needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not focus consistently enough on supporting children's next steps in learning to help them achieve rapid progress in their learning.  The childminder's self-evaluation and professional development plans are not ambitious enough. She does not focus enough on improving her knowledge and teaching and that of her assistant, to achieve excellent outcomes for all children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance teaching so that there are greater levels of support for children's next steps that help them to make more rapid progress in their learning  strengthen self-evaluation and professional development to help raise standards in teaching and learning, in order to increase the potential to achieve excellent outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector discussed the planning of activities with the childminder.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder, assistant and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of adults living and working on the premises.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of training and talked to the childminder about her self-evaluation procedures and priorities for improvement.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers from their written comments and the childminder's most recent survey.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder ensures that she keeps her knowledge of safeguarding issues and that of her assistant up to date. The childminder and her assistant have a good knowledge and understanding of signs and indicators of abuse and neglect. They know the referral procedure and the correct steps to take if an allegation is made. Thorough risk assessments are in place to help ensure the environment is safe. The childminder works really well alongside her assistant and the co- childminder to organise routines and activities. The childminder supervises her assistant effectively to ensure that she supports the children's learning well. The childminder makes appropriate use of knowledge gathered at the workshops she attends. For example, following a recent training event, she now encourages older children to brush their teeth after lunch to reinforce good health practice. The childminder makes appropriate links with

other professionals to ensure children who have special educational needs receive good support.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder clearly demonstrates that she has a good knowledge and understanding of how to support children's learning. She plans and provides a broad range of activities which successfully helps children to develop the skills they need for their future learning. For example, children participate in daily group activities where they learn to take turns, listen to others and contribute to discussions. The childminder and her assistant provide good support for learning. They always encourage children to try to complete tasks themselves. They make sure that younger children are supported to join in with activities. The childminder keeps parents informed of children's progress. She gathers information about children's achievements at home to help her plan for their future learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder and her assistant are very good role models. They skilfully reinforce positive messages during play. For example, they encourage children to help each other and to show patience while waiting for others to have their turn. Care practices are well implemented and children's individual needs are met. The childminder promotes children's understanding of a healthy lifestyle very well. For example, she ensures children participate in daily music and movement activities and she talks about the effects of exercise on the body. The indoor space is well organised to provide an attractive, comfortable and safe place for children to play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning. Children develop very strong bonds with each other, the childminder and her assistant. Children are extremely patient, kind and respectful. They show genuine pleasure in their own achievements and those of others. They demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm and motivation for activities and stay focused for very long periods of time. Children are very confident in making their needs known. For example, they are comfortable to ask any of the adults for help if they cannot find something. Children have good communication skills and contribute well to conversations.
