Excellent transition planning, effective communication with the placing authority, and tremendous work with the existing group of children and young people has ensured a smooth transition into the home for this child. A culture of warmth, love, and affection has enveloped him, helping him feel cared for, which has promoted excellent relationships. Staff have quickly learned his behaviours and vulnerabilities, establishing strategies for keeping him safe and minimising negative behaviour. This has already had a really positive impact with a tremendous reduction in physical interventions. Previously he was experiencing numerous holds a day but he has had just five since moving here in September. This improvement in his behaviour has led to a significant reduction in reliance on medication that was previously used to modify his behaviour. One professional commented: ‘They have turned this little boy’s life around.’

All children and young people enjoy fantastic relationships with staff and with each other. The home presents as a relaxed and warm family environment. A number of improvements to the fabric of the home has enhanced this further. A rabbit has been added to the family, with one young person taking charge of its care. This enables her to learn new skills and feel a sense of responsibility for the rabbit.

Children and young people benefit from education packages appropriate to their needs. Staff advocate strongly for them, ensuring the right education providers are identified. Education providers report that children and young people exceed expectations in their learning because of the excellent joint working and consistency between school and the home. Young people’s education is complemented by a variety of learning opportunities in the home and a robust life skills programme of activities such as baking, shopping, and caring for wildlife. One young person enjoys volunteering at a nearby farm, others have taken part in fire training, broadening their knowledge and experiences. All children and young people show an enormous improvement in their behaviour with a dramatic reduction in physical interventions and no incidents of being missing from the home. This is due to the fantastic relationships they enjoy with

Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
