p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Young people continue to make excellent progress in their education with staff tenaciously advocating on their behalf, ensuring that each young person has the right education package to meet their individual needs. Young people with historically poor education attendance now attend 100% as a result. One education provider praised the staff for their ‘outstanding work and commitment shown’ in ensuring that young people access the right education packages.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Educational attainment is complemented with learning from a host of activities and through an excellent and comprehensive independence and life skills programme. This programme is tailored to the individual and their levels of understanding, ensuring all young people benefit. Young people play an active part in their community, baking cakes for the elderly and raising funds for charities. One young person volunteers with a homeless charity and the local food bank, which increases her social skills as well as providing essential assistance to charities.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Several young people have benefitted from short stays with this home. Staff have been able to identify and assess the needs of these young people, providing essential information to enable a smooth transition to a new placement, or a return home.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Staff work extremely hard to identify the vulnerabilities and behaviours of young people and work effectively in partnership to protect them. Where young people display extremely challenging and violent behaviour, staff engage with mental health specialists, taking part in intensive training and workshops, to devise strategies to support them to manage this more effectively. In addition, the manager has researched other homes dealing with certain behaviours and learning disabilities, broadening her knowledge of such needs. This learning is still relatively new, and currently the use of physical intervention remains high in order to protect young people and staff from violent behaviour, although the number of incidents reduce for young people compared to previous placements. Staff benefit from high quality debriefs, identifying learning from incidents.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Excellent partnership working has reduced risk-taking behaviour by young people, such as going missing and associated risks of sexual exploitation. One professional commented that staff have been able to ‘turn the young person around’, with many risk-taking behaviours decreasing or stopping altogether.
p.3
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Recording of incidents is generally of a high standard. One physical intervention record was found to lack clarity and action taken during a missing incident lacked detail. A recommendation is made to ensure all records provide excellent level of detail and clarity.
p.3
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
The manager utilises a range of monitoring tools to identify the progress of young people and inform plans for future developments. Training workshops, on line courses and a raft of resources and toolkits developed by the manager provide a range of learning opportunities for staff, with several developing skills to take senior roles within the organisation.

Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
