This provision is good

 The childminder forms effective partnerships with parents and other professionals. There is a good two-way exchange of information about children's achievements and their next steps in learning. This contributes effectively to providing continuity in their care and education.  The childminder observes and assesses children's achievements successfully and uses these to help her identify their next steps in learning. She provides activities that meet children's interests and these help children make good progress in their learning in relation to their starting points.  Children develop a good awareness of healthy lifestyles and enjoy plenty of exercise.  Children receive clear and consistent explanations about what is expected of them and why this is needed. Children behave well.  Children are confident and are able to choose the resources they want to use and lead their own play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently make the most of opportunities to help children develop an early understanding about diversity and the wider world.  Children do not consistently have a wide variety of experiences available to help build on their creativity, exploration and sensory skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to learn about diversity and the wider world  develop opportunities for children to participate in activities to extend their creativity, sensory and exploration skills further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder interacting with the children and the quality of her teaching.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents.  The inspector had discussions with the childminder in relation to how she observes, assesses and plans children's learning and play experiences.  The inspector looked at a range of relevant documentation, such as children's records, safeguarding records, policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her role in protecting children from harm. She checks her environment each day for potential hazards to help her ensure that children can play in safety. The childminder has a valid first-aid certificate and demonstrates a good understanding of what to do in the event of an accident or injury to a child. She monitors children's ongoing progress well overall. She considers her practice and evaluates where she can improve. For example, she has started attending a safeguarding training course to keep her knowledge up to date.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good knowledge of children's interests and characters. She makes good use of this knowledge to help her provide activities that engage and motivate children in their learning. The childminder encourages children to build on their skills during everyday tasks and activities. For example, during their walk home from nursery she encourages children to identify different letters and numbers on road signs. In addition, they match patterns together and count how many dots there are during a game of dominoes. The childminder interacts skilfully with children and helps them extend on their learning well. The childminder encourages children to develop their communication skills and values the views they share with her.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form strong emotional bonds with the childminder and settle in quickly. Children feel at home and the childminder meets their emotional needs well. For example, she calmly deals with any challenging behaviour when children are not feeling fully well and helps them to express how they are feeling in words. The childminder encourages children to take responsibility, such as tidying up after themselves. Children have a good understanding of the need to share and take turns. They develop a good awareness of managing their own personal care needs. For example, they confidently use cutlery to eat and they wash their hands independently.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain the skills they need for the next stages in their learning, such as in readiness for school. They are independent and make their own choices about their play. Children concentrate well and enjoy playing games with the childminder. They develop good coordination skills and learn to solve problems and work things out for themselves; for example, when working out where to place counters to get four positioned in a row.
