This provision is good
The childminder provides a warm, calm and inviting environment for children. Children form strong bonds with the childminder, and are happy and settled in her care. She supports their emotional development effectively and they behave well. The childminder seeks the views of parents and children to help her evaluate her practice and make plans for future developments, activities and improvements. Parents are welcomed into the setting and are well informed about their children's development. For example, the childminder shares her observations and assessments of children's progress on a regular basis. Parents share details of their children's interests and achievements at home with the childminder. Children enjoy an exciting range of activities and experiences. They have an interesting range of resources to choose from, which helps to support their learning and development. Children make good progress from their starting points.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
On occasions, the childminder does not offer a broad range of learning opportunities that fully extend or inspire children to develop their own creative ideas. The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to extend her skills and knowledge further, to raise the quality of her practice to an outstanding level and to help children make the best possible progress.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder and children as they played, and talked with them at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector held discussions with the childminder in relation to observations of children's play, learning and progress. The inspector sampled documentation, including suitability checks, children's records and some policies. The inspector spoke to parents available on the day of inspection and took note of their views. The inspector viewed areas of the house and garden used for childminding.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of child protection issues and what procedures to follow if she has any welfare concerns. She makes effective use of risk assessments, policies and procedures to help support children's well-being. The childminder has built strong links with other settings that children attend. They regularly share learning and development information about children. This helps support continuity and consistency for children. The childminder is well organised and keeps all the required records for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder makes effective use of her observations of children's learning and development to monitor their progress. She generally plans exciting activities for children that reflect and build on their recent experiences. For example, children enjoyed finding penguins and snowmen figures in pretend snow. The childminder supports children's communication development well. For example, she encourages them to think and talk about their visits, such as to the zoo and Lapland. She introduces new words for children to learn and makes effective use of questioning to extend children's knowledge. The childminder makes mathematical learning enjoyable. For example, children enjoy finding snowmen with their number on and arranging the snowmen in numerical order.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides children with many opportunities to enjoy the fresh air and energetic play. For example, they visit the beach, local parks and woods, farms and the zoo. The childminder effectively supports children to learn about healthy lifestyles. For example, she talks about the need to wash their hands before eating. Children enjoy a variety of experiences that help them learn about the wider world. For example, they visit large social groups and celebrate festivals. The childminder uses simple rules and boundaries to help keep children safe. Children are confident in the childminder's care and communicate freely with each other and the childminder.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are independent. For example, they fetch their own snacks and drinks, learn to put on their shoes and put away toys. They learn good manners, to share toys and take turns. For example, children enjoy completing puzzles and wait patiently for help from the childminder. Children learn to recognise their names, for example, as they find their named pirate to stick on the pirate ship. Children talk about numbers as they play, and learn to count. Children gain the necessary skills in preparation for their future learning and their move on to school.
