This provision is good

 The childminder establishes warm and caring relationships with children. She knows them well and responds to their individual care needs and routines.  The childminder works with parents and other settings that children attend to provide a consistent approach to children's care, learning and development.  The childminder uses her observations and assessments of children effectively to plan activities and experiences to help children learn. She monitors children's progress well and quickly closes any gaps in their development. All children make good progress from their starting points.  Children behave well. The childminder uses praise effectively to motivate children and to help them develop confidence in their own abilities.  The childminder uses self-evaluation well to evaluate the quality of provision and involves children and parents in the process to make continuous improvements.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not have regular opportunities to use their imaginations in creative activities.  At times, the childminder offers suggestions too quickly rather than allowing children enough time to use their thinking skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to use their own imagination and creativity  allow children more time to explore their own ideas and develop their thinking skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play indoors and evaluated the effectiveness of a planned activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to a parent and read parents' comments and took account of their views.  The inspector sampled a range of policies and documentation to keep children healthy and safe.  The inspector spoke to children and looked at their learning and development records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of how to safeguard children and protect their welfare. She is aware of the signs and symptoms that could cause concern and how to respond if necessary. The childminder regularly assesses potential risks to children and explains to parents how she keeps children healthy and safe. The childminder has an early years qualification and keeps up to date with current childcare issues to ensure she has a good awareness of how to keep children safe. She regularly shares information with parents to help them to continue children's learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well. She uses a good range of teaching strategies to help to develop children's communication and language. For example, she uses good questioning skills and talks to young children about what they are doing. The childminder adapts her plans for different groups of children. For example, leftover tissue paper becomes presents in Santa's sleigh. Children develop their physical skills, for instance, as they post small plastic envelopes into a toy post box. The childminder helps children learn about similarities and differences between people. For example, children celebrate a range of religious festivals such as Diwali and Christmas, which helps them learn about how others live.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children's personal, social and emotional development well. For example, she gives children the individual attention and reassurance they need to help them settle. She plans her resources and activities effectively for the different age groups of children she cares for. For example, a board of visual pictures and words helps young children make choices about the activities they want to play with. The childminder supports children's good health and well-being. For instance, she follows parents' wishes for sleeping routines. Children learn how to keep themselves safe. For example, they learn about road safety when walking to school. The childminder helps children learn about the wider world. They attend regular activities in the local community and visit places of interest where they learn about the natural world.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the skills for the next stage of their learning through play. For example, they attempt to count the number of green 'baubles' stuck to their Christmas tree. Children listen with interest to stories and respond to familiar sounds, such as 'moo' for a cow. They begin to understand about technology and how things work. For instance, they press a button on a battery-operated toy to evoke a sound.
