This provision is good

 Staff form good partnerships with parents. They provide parents with detailed information about their children's progress and encourage them to extend their children's learning at home.  The management team makes effective use of self-evaluation and accurately reflects on the practice. The new manager and staff have implemented a number of changes that have successfully improved the quality of the pre-school and outcomes for children.  Staff use their knowledge of children well to provide a broad range of resources and activities that motivates them to learn. For example, toys are easily accessible for all children, which enables them to make choices and follow their own interests. All children make good progress from their individual starting points.  The management team monitors the planning and children's assessments well. There is an effective tracking system in place to enable them to promptly highlight any gaps in

children's progress and provide support to ensure that these gaps are quickly closed.  All children, including those who have special educational needs or disabilities and those who speak an additional language, make good progress. Staff make effective use of individual plans to support their needs well. Staff work effectively with other professionals to support children's specialist care and learning needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not always give full consideration to how they can best support the learning of children who prefer to be outdoors.  Staff do not always provide children with a wide range of opportunities to learn about other communities and cultures to help strengthen their understanding of diversity.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enrich the opportunities for children who like to play outdoors to learn in their preferred environment  increase opportunities for children to value and develop an understanding of their own and other people's similarities and differences to help them learn more about diversity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the premises and the toys and equipment provided.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed its impact on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with staff and children at convenient times through the inspection.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, including attendance registers, children's records and suitability checks.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The management ensures all staff are suitable to work with children and have a secure understanding of their roles and responsibilities. All staff are aware of how to keep children safe and follow up any concerns about their welfare. Staff identify and minimise risks effectively so that children can play safely. Robust procedures for recruitment are implemented well. Regular supervision meetings for staff enable the managers to identify training and development opportunities to enhance staff practice and teaching skills. Managers have established good links with the local school, which helps to ensure continuity of learning and care. Parents speak highly of the staff team and comment that they value the care and support their children receive. They state that they are kept well informed of their children's progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The well-qualified staff provide activities that challenge and engage children well. They encourage children to count and match numbers as they play. Children enjoy creating their Christmas pictures and are very proud of their achievements. Children work together on the computer, making decisions and solving problems. They enjoy stories and have fun singing songs and joining in with the actions. Children play in the grotto and take on the role of Santa, telling each other, 'You have to be good or he won't come'. They explore tinsel and cotton wool balls. They pretend it is snow and put it in their hair, which they find very funny.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have good relationships with their key persons and other staff. Staff use a calm approach and are positive role models. Children understand the pre-school rules, follow routines and are kind to their friends. Staff offer lots of praise, which helps to boost children's self-esteem. Children benefit from fresh air and exercise on a daily basis. Children show good independence in their personal care. Staff teach them about leading healthy lifestyles, talking to them about foods that keep their bodies healthy. They support children to do things for themselves safely, for example, using knives to cut up fruit and bread at snack time. Lunchtime is a relaxed and sociable event with children sitting together and helping each other.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who speak English as an additional language and children who have special educational needs or disabilities, develop strong communication skills. For example, they ask questions and listen to others during discussions. Additional funding is used effectively to meet the children's individual needs. Children develop good coordination skills and learn how to use tools correctly. They engage well with each other and staff and are eager and enthusiastic learners. Children develop independence and confidence as staff celebrate their achievements. They gain the skills they need to prepare them well for the move to school and for their future learning.
