This provision is good

 Significant improvements have been made since the last inspection. Record keeping and management systems have been strengthened, and there is now a clear focus on teaching and learning.  Children enjoy and become engrossed in the activities provided. They are especially keen to join in play and activities where staff are providing support.  Staff use what they know about children's development and interests to plan and provide a wide range of activities to support children's all-round development.  Children, including those who speak English as an additional language or who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, are well supported to make good progress. The manager works well with other professionals involved with the children to achieve this.  Children are settled, happy and confident. They make good choices about how and where they play. They behave well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The manager currently has a temporary manager. This does not provide her with continuity in the support and monitoring required for her professional development.  The manager has only recently started to monitor the progress of groups of children. As a result, there is currently no clear overview of whether any groups are at risk of not meeting developmental milestones.  Staff do not always make the most of opportunities to extend children's vocabulary and learning in child led play and discussion.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide a permanent solution to the line management of the playgroup manager so that she continues to receive consistent and regular monitoring and one-to-one meetings to support her professional development  embed the systems that have been developed to monitor the progress of different groups of children so that any developing gaps in children's progress are identified promptly and acted upon swiftly  improve staff skills in using all opportunities to develop and extend children's vocabulary and learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in both nursery rooms and in the outdoor area.  The inspector spoke to members of staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection and held a meeting with the manager.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day of the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning documentation, evidence of the suitability of staff working in the playgroup and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The playgroup has a comprehensive range of policies and procedures that underpin staff practice, for example, staff implement the behaviour management policy consistently throughout each session. Staff have a good understanding of the playgroup's child protection policy and procedure. They know what to do if they have concerns about a child's welfare, and have used the procedures effectively to safeguard children who attend the playgroup. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Good methods have been introduced to encourage parents to support children's learning. Stay and play sessions are open to all parents to play alongside their children and learn about the benefits of play. Staff work well with the parents of their key children. They share information about children's development and provide parents with specific activities to do at home to help to speed children's progress in the areas they most need support. Staff have regular

supervision meetings with the manager, which are used effectively to support their professional development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff have a good understanding of the children in their care and assess their development accurately. Planning is adapted and changed to respond to children's interests and learning needs on a daily basis. Staff note what children play with. The manager uses this information to monitor where children play so that effective changes can be made to ensure all areas of learning are planned for using children's current fascinations. Staff skilfully model how to play and use resources. For example, they showed children how to roll dough into a ball and then used a rolling pin to flatten it before cutting out shapes. Children watched, copied and then independently enjoyed success cutting their own shapes out.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The playgroup is a welcoming and child-friendly environment. Children independently access a good range of resources, such as, collage materials to create pictures, construction toys and water. Children have confidence in the adults who care for them. When playing in the role play area or water, for example, they invite adults to join in their play, making them imaginary food and drink. Staff respond warmly to this, joining in with enthusiasm. Children's physical development is well promoted indoors and outdoors. Children use spoons to make large movements to bang on a drum and propel themselves around in cars using their legs. Snacks and drinks have a healthy focus.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are independent young learners who are developing skills, knowledge and attitudes to support them well for their future education. Children's literacy skills are developing well. They are interested in stories and books. Children are developing good control of their arms and hands. They use pens and paintbrushes to make pictures and represent writing. Children use the mathematical language of size and shape in their play with developing understanding. With support and encouragement from staff children dress themselves for outdoor play.
