This provision is good

 Children are confident, happy and settle well with the childminder. They enjoy the good range of activities on offer that help them to make good progress.  Children are well mannered, considerate and understand how to behave well. The childminder makes children aware of expectations about their behaviour and offers lots of praise and encouragement to help them understand right from wrong.  The childminder engages children in many discussions as they play. She supports their understanding and use of language well and encourages their involvement in conversations.  The childminder is proactive in increasing her skills to improve the quality of teaching and learning for all children.  The childminder is vigilant about safety and often makes changes in her practices to further support children's welfare. She provides guidance and support to help children learn how to keep themselves safe as they play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's does not always identify any emerging gaps in children's learning at the very earliest opportunity.  The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to make children aware of how to use technology to source information.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve the monitoring of children's progress to identify promptly any gaps in their learning  provide more opportunities for children to understand how to use technology to extend their learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records and a sample of other documentation including policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the childminder's evaluations and feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder recognises the importance of professional development to enable her to make improvements. For example, she is completing a childcare qualification at level 3 to increase her skills and improve the quality of teaching. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities in relation to child protection and knows how to respond to any concerns to help keep children safe. The childminder identifies the progress children make, and uses this information to help her provide activities that help them to take the next steps in their learning. She provides parents with information about the progress children are making to keep them informed. This, along with the information she exchanges with other childcare settings, helps her to provide consistent support for each child.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy the time they spend with the childminder and are keen to be involved in the activities she provides. They speak confidently, for example as they talk about the colour and texture of the glitters they use to decorate their paper Christmas trees. They learn to use the glue and pour the glitter carefully and use their imaginations to create their own artwork. The childminder is fully involved in children's play, extending their learning through good interaction. For example, children start to recognise the sounds of letters in their own name as they talk jovially about monkeys eating bananas. The childminder now provides a wider range of activities in her garden to provide better support for children who prefer to learn outdoors. This is an improvement since her last inspection.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are relaxed and comfortable in the childminder's home. She is always close by, offering praise and reassurance, helping children to feel secure. Children's health is supported well and they learn good hygiene routines to prevent germs spreading. For example, they know to wash their hands before eating their snack. The childminder supervises children well, and provides a safe and secure environment. She teaches children about keeping safe, for example as they pretend to make a cup of tea in the play kitchen, they show they understand the need to be careful around hot drinks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and are prepared well for the next stage in their learning. They show a keen interest in books, and often select a book to look at by themselves. They regularly attend group activities with the childminder, learning how to share and take turns and building friendships with others. They learn about number value as they count the beads on the abacus.
