p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder's knowledge and understanding of current guidance and legislation are not yet good enough. She has not identified where she can continue to complete further training in order to improve her knowledge and enhance her practice further.  The childminder does not always make the best use of information gained from parents and her initial observations, in order to identify children's starting points to support their future learning. She does not yet monitor children's progress precisely enough in order to plan activities that fully match their capabilities.  Although improvements have been made since the last inspection, the childminder is not yet making the best use of her evaluation methods. She does not always identify how to address weaknesses in her practice quickly to fully promote children's welfare and learning.  Children do not always benefit from opportunities to learn about people and

communities beyond their immediate experiences.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Babies and children are happy and settled. They have built close attachments with the childminder who ensures their care needs are sufficiently met.  Written feedback from parents is very positive. Information is shared with parents so that they are generally kept informed about how their children are, the activities they enjoy doing and achievements they make.  The childminder interacts well with children and joins in with their chosen play. She provides children with a range of play experiences both in the home and on outings. Children are cared for in a clean and safe environment. They have space to move, rest and play, and enjoy access to a suitable range of toys and equipment.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the programme of professional development and develop skills further to gain a better understanding of current guidance and legislation to continue to improve and enhance practice further 31/03/2017

p.2

Due Date

 make better use of information gained from parents when children first start to clearly identify quickly what children know and can do and effectively monitor the progress children are making in order to plan precisely for their future learning. 28/02/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen the evaluation of the setting to accurately identify areas for further development that will secure continuous improvement  provide children with more opportunities to learn about people and communities beyond their immediate experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation with regard to children's learning, welfare and safety.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate time during the inspection. She took account of parents' views through reading feedback latters.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has made some improvements since her last inspection. However, her knowledge and understanding with regard to some current guidance and legislation is still limited. She has not yet fully identified training opportunities to continue to enhance her knowledge further so that children's welfare and learning are promoted to the highest level. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has detailed safeguarding procedures in place and these have been written in line with the Local Safeguarding Children Board. She has a sound understanding of the signs and symptoms of abuse and understands her responsibilities if she suspects a child is at risk from harm. The childminder has updated most of her policies and procedures and shared these with parents. The childminder has built links with other settings children attend and information is shared to support children's ongoing learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder is well qualified. However, she does not always use her skills to ensure her teaching is consistently good. The childminder does not quickly identify children's capabilities when they begin with her. In addition, she does always track and monitor the overall progress children are making. This means any gaps in learning or areas children are excelling in are not always identified or well planned for so that all children are supported to reach the highest levels of attainment. Babies are curious and inquisitive and enjoy exploring natural materials. Children develop their muscle control and coordination as they tip, scoop and pour pasta, using different size containers. The childminder interacts well with children; she models and repeats words to help babies and young children develop their emerging language.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's well-being is not promoted to the highest level because of weaknesses in the childminder's knowledge and practice. Nevertheless, the childminder is warm and caring. She ensures babies and children's routines from home are followed and offers continued praise and reassurance, which supports their emotional well-being. The childminder takes the children on regular trips and visits. This means they have opportunities for fresh air, physical exercise and to develop their social skills as they mix with other children. However, she does not always provide children with experiences to help them learn and understand about the wider world around them.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although children are making typical progress for their age, teaching is not yet good enough to ensure that all children are being highly supported to reach their full potential. Children are gaining some basic skills needed ready for their future learning. They explore their surroundings using their sense and have many opportunities to develop their physical skills. Young children's emerging language is developing as they learn new words daily.
