This provision is good

 The childminder assesses children's progress effectively to identify their next steps in learning and areas where they may need additional support.  Children access a range of interesting activities and happily choose from a variety of resources in the home. They make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points.  The childminder is caring, kind and thoughtful. She knows the children well and provides them with good levels of emotional security. Children are self-assured, happy and confidently explore their surroundings.  The childminder supports young children's communication and language development well. She speaks and listens to the children carefully, for example, during conversations, to guide and develop their early language and communication skills.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to extend children's early writing skills.  The childminder's self-evaluation processes are in their infancy and do not fully include parents' views and ideas to help her identify where she can improve and develop her service further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities throughout the day to extend children's early writing skills further  increase opportunities to seek and use parents' views and ideas in the evaluation process to help improve and develop the service further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder with the children and spoke with the childminder about children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection, regarding her practice and the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning.  The inspector checked the documentation the childminder uses to support her practice.  The inspector read and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation document.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands how to recognise if a child is at risk of harm and the procedures to follow if she has a concern. She updates her knowledge regularly to ensure she understands current legislation and any emerging safeguarding issues. The childminder is keen to continue her professional development to help improve her teaching practice and enhance the quality of her provision. She checks her home for hazards and takes suitable steps to minimise risks. The childminder forms good partnerships with parents and other settings sharing the children's care. They work effectively together and provide consistency in children's care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how young children learn. Children are happy and make choices about their play from the variety of resources available. Children enjoy using their imagination creatively in make-believe play. For example, they enjoy playing shops and taking on the role of shopkeeper where they learn about counting the food and how much money they need. Children develop their early reading skills and a real interest in books. They enjoy sitting with the childminder as she reads stories to them. The childminder encourages children's early mathematical skills well. For example, she knows children can count to three and then extends activities to encourage understanding of how to count to four and beyond.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children show that they are settled and confident in the childminder's care. They behave very well. The childminder boosts their self-esteem as she praises their efforts and achievements. Children learn how to become independent and the childminder actively encourages them to try to manage some simple tasks independently. For example, they are able to put on their shoes and coats before going in the garden. The childminder maintains children's good health effectively. For example, children know why they need to wash their hands before they eat and they enjoy healthy meals and snacks. They gain good physical skills, for instance, when they play in the garden or go on outings to the park.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children's progress is at least typical for their age and stage of development. They are keen to learn and concentrate for long periods at activities. For example, children show great interest in a colour-mixing activity and notice the changes occurring when two paints are mixed together. Children show good early reading skills and are quickly learning the skills they need for their future and for school.
