Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

p.1

3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The quality of teaching is inconsistent and, as a result, learning opportunities are occasionally missed or are lacking in sufficient challenge for children to make good progress.  The childminder does not use her observations well enough to accurately assess children's current stage of development. Consequently, she is not able to plan activities that consistently build on what children already know and can do, to help children make good progress.  The childminder does not identify and act on areas of weaknesses to continually improve the quality of her practice and provision.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder takes all necessary steps to keep children safe and protected. She keeps her safeguarding knowledge updated and appropriate policies and procedures are implemented consistently.  The childminder is warm, caring and attentive to children's needs. She provides children with lots of praise and reassurance. Consequently, children develop secure relationships with her and they are happy and settled.  The childminder takes children on outings in the local community and to toddler groups. She uses these opportunities to give children a chance to mix with larger groups and to learn new skills, such as making friendships with others. This helps children to learn about other people and the world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 raise the quality of teaching so that children receive consistently challenging and purposeful learning opportunities in every aspect of their learning 14/01/2017

p.2

Due Date

 use the information gained from observations to accurately identify children's stage of development and plan appropriate next steps for every child, so that they are supported in making the best possible progress in all seven areas of learning. 14/01/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop the process of self-evaluation to clearly identify areas of practice that are in need of improvement and then take appropriate action to address these, in order to improve outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection and made observations of children present. The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector asked the childminder questions about her practice at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records and checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in writing.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder checks her home and places visited on outings and takes action to minimise any risks. She has improved her knowledge and understanding of how to keep children safe by updating her safeguarding training. The childminder knows how to report any concerns she may have about a child in her care. The childminder shares information with parents about what children have been doing and regularly discusses their progress. However, the childminder has not yet precisely identified effective ways to address weaknesses in her practice in order for children to make the best possible progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder is experienced and provides some activities that interest children. However, she does not fully use the information gained through her observations of children when she plans their activities. As a result, children are not always as eager as possible to take part and are not encouraged to become deeply involved in their learning. The childminder's teaching is not consistent enough to secure good progress in all aspects of children's learning. For example, she does not always interact with children well enough to help them build on what they already know and can do. Nevertheless, the childminder is warm and caring towards children. She provides a variety of activities and resources to help children learn. She uses some appropriate teaching methods. For example, she encourages children to think about numbers and shapes as they build with blocks. Children are encouraged to use their imagination as they pretend to sail a boat or swim in

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder has a caring disposition towards children. Children's good behaviour shows that they feel safe, secure and settled. The childminder plans opportunities for children to become increasingly independent and confident. For example, children enjoy new challenges, such as going to different places in the community where they meet new people. Children are emotionally secure, happy and settled in the childminder's care. However, the weaknesses in planning and teaching mean that the learning environment for children is not challenging or stimulating enough to secure their good progress. Children are encouraged to develop a healthy lifestyle and have regular opportunities to exercise. These include trips to the local shops, parks or toddler groups. The childminder has a consistent approach to promoting positive behaviour.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Most children are making typical progress for their age. However, because teaching is sometimes inconsistent, children make steady rather than consistently good progress overall. They learn to listen carefully to the childminder's instructions and develop good social skills. This assists them in forming strong friendships and in being confident when meeting new people. In general, children are suitably prepared for the next stage of their learning.
