This provision is good

 The childminder generally has a good understanding of the learning and development requirements and appropriate expectations for children's achievement. Children make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder provides a good range of toys and resources to meet the needs and interests of the children, particularly when they learn inside.  Children play in a clean and safe environment where they learn to keep themselves safe and follow good hygiene practices.  The childminder builds very good relationships with parents, resulting in them feeling reassured and very happy with the service they receive.  The childminder's self-evaluation supports continuous improvement. She values parents' and children's views which she uses to guide further improvements.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder does not give children appropriate opportunities to explore and experiment themselves to aid their learning.  The childminder does not consistently plan effective learning opportunities for children who learn best outdoors.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the children's abilities to explore and experiment independently to aid their learning  plan more effective learning opportunities for children who prefer to learn outdoors.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home and in the garden.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed and evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records and planning, and discussed the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The enthusiastic childminder focuses on her personal development, for example she attends training courses, reads articles and shares practice with other childminders to help improve outcomes for children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of local child protection procedures and knows what to do if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder checks children's progress to identify where they may need to catch up in their learning. Partnerships with parents and the other settings children attend are well established. Information is successfully shared to complement children's care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder establishes secure starting points in consultation with parents to help her plan for children's next steps in learning. She typically plans suitable activities based on the children's interests. The childminder is a good role model to children and she uses effective ways of learning, particularly when children learn indoors. For example, during a sticking activity, she encourages children to use their imagination, to explore colours and textures, and to safely handle tools such as scissors. Children find out how things work, for example, by operating various programmable toys with buttons and knobs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children to feel safe and secure. She spends time getting to know them to help her meet their needs. Children behave very well; they learn good manners and are kind and considerate. They respond positively to the childminder's praise and encouragement. The childminder teaches children about healthy eating in different ways, for example, by growing fruit and vegetables and cooking activities. Children develop good personal skills, for instance they learn to dress themselves and lay the table for lunch. Children develop good control over their bodies. For instance, they use a range of apparatus and enjoy dancing to different types of music.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain good practical skills in preparation for their next stage of learning and eventual move to school. They develop confidence in early reading and writing. For example, as they listen to and make up stories, begin to recognise letters and words, and write for different purposes. Children use mathematical language confidently such as 'big' and 'small', 'shorter' and 'longer than'. They develop their creativity through role play, music, and art and craft activities.
