Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not hold a current paediatric first aid certificate. This is a breach of requirements. However, the childminder knows what to do should a child become injured and children are well cared for as a result. The childminder knows she needs to complete training and is booked to attend a course just a couple of days after the inspection. The childminder does not always use her observations to accurately think about children's next steps and so does not always help them to learn as much as they might. The childminder does not fully review or reflect on her own practice to ensure the outcomes for children can be enriched.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder gives children the opportunity to make choices about their play. The childminder is eager to improve and wants to complete further training. The childminder is working with the parents to help children make progress with their learning. The childminder puts children at their ease and helps them to settle. Children are confident and happy.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Due Date
ensure a relevant paediatric first aid qualification is held and renew it as required so that it remains up to date 31/12/2016
p.2
Due Date
improve the quality of teaching so that it matches the learning needs of all the children and enables them to make the best possible progress. 31/01/2017
p.2
Due Date
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
develop the effectiveness of self-evaluation so that it accurately defines what the childminder needs to do to improve further.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed an adult-led activity with the childminder. The inspector observed children at play. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection. The inspector took account of parent's written views. The inspector sampled a range of documents including children's learning journals and children's assessment records.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder is working hard to consolidate her knowledge since her last inspection. She is working with a local authority advisor and has improved the way she assesses children’s learning. She does not always fully reflect on her practice and is in the process of identifying further training to do. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is able to demonstrate an understanding of the procedures to be followed if she had concerns about a child or if an allegation were to be made against an adult in her household. The home provides a safe environment for children because the childminder completes regular risk assessments.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder observes children regularly. Children's starting points are collected by talking to parents and making observations on their first day. The childminder assesses children's learning effectively. She has a sound understanding of what children enjoy and what they can do. However, her knowledge of how to plan for their next steps is not as secure. This means that she does not always provide activities that are completely suited to what children need to learn and children do not make the progress they are capable of. Overall, the childminder provides a suitable balance of adult-led teaching and play opportunities that children enjoy.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder provides opportunities for children to choose what they want to do. She readily follows their lead, for example, if they want to go outside or play with musical instruments. This means that children's behaviour is good and they are engaged in their activities. Children are kind to each other and share toys. A daily register is kept and attendance is monitored so that the childminder knows where children are to help keep them safe. The childminder works closely with parents and uses a daily diary for babies so that key information can be shared.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children show an interest in learning, for example, they enjoy feeding the chickens and counting how many eggs they can collect. Young children counted three eggs into the box, for example. Even young children are developing their independence which will help them be ready for the next stage in their education. They put on their own shoes and coats. However the childminder's lack of understanding about children's next steps means the progress children make is not as good as it could be.
