They follow good hygiene routines, eat healthily and enjoy exercising.  The childminder carries out risk assessments of the environments the children use, ensuring they can play in safety and are kept free from harm.  Children behave well and they respond positively to praise, for example, as they celebrate their achievements.  The enthusiastic childminder evaluates the effectiveness of her good childminding service and obtains the views of the children and their parents. This leads to continuous improvement in her service.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Parents are not asked for enough relevant information about their children's abilities when they first start, to help the childminder plan for their learning more quickly.  Sometimes, the childminder does not make the best use of different opportunities to develop children's early literacy skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 gain more useful information from parents about their children's abilities and interests to help plan for their learning as soon as they start  strengthen the opportunities for children to build on and practise their early writing skills.

p.2

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed and evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records and planning, and discussed the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder keeps up to date with changes in legislation. She knows how to identify children who may be at risk of harm and the procedures to follow. The childminder develops her professional knowledge. For example, she attends training courses to enhance her work with children. The childminder develops good relationships with parents and, overall, shares information about their children's learning and welfare effectively. She complements children's learning further by, for instance, working closely with pre-school staff. Parents are pleased that the childminder teaches their children to keep safe, for example, when crossing the road.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder understands how children learn. She successfully assesses children's progress, identifies any achievement gaps and plans for their next steps for learning. The childminder uses effective teaching methods, for example, she speaks clearly to help children develop good listening and speaking skills. The childminder provides good learning opportunities indoors and outdoors. Children are eager to learn and they make good progress in all areas. The childminder supports mathematics well. For example, during a table-top activity she helped children to take turns to identify colours, numbers, shapes and sizes. Children explore measurement during cooking activities.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop close relationships with the caring childminder. They are happy, settle quickly and are secure. Children develop good self-awareness. For example, they look at themselves in mirrors and talk about their facial features. Children have good opportunities to learn about the world in which they live. For instance, they observe animals, play with multicultural toys and join in local pre-school group activities. Children are physically active. For example, they climb, slide and balance on apparatus at the park. Activities such as picking up pretend coins to post help to strengthen their hand muscles.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good communication and language skills. For example, they learn new words and respond to questions. They develop small muscle skills, for example, as they make marks in water and shaving foam. Children develop good creative skills and imagination. For instance, they paint, enjoy musical activities and take part in role play. Children become more independent. They begin to dress themselves and manage in the bathroom. Children experience a range of activities which helps them to become curious learners. They gain the necessary skills in preparation for moving on to school.
