Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has failed to maintain her paediatric first-aid qualification to ensure children's safety. This is also a breach of the requirements of the Childcare Register.  The quality of teaching is variable at times. For example, the childminder does not provide consistently good levels of challenge in children's learning. This hinders them from making the progress that they should, considering their starting points on entry.  The childminder's self-evaluation is not vigorous enough to swiftly identify and address all areas, in particular, to improve gaps in her professional knowledge.  The childminder does not organise some of her toys well, particularly so that they are easy for children to reach or reflect their wider interests fully.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder offers children a range of experiences in the local community such as visits to play groups and community events.  Children follow suitable hygiene routines such as hand washing after using the toilet. They benefit from nutritious snacks and meals, and follow a healthy lifestyle.  The childminder is caring and friendly, and children respond positively to her. Children demonstrate they feel happy in her care.  The childminder keeps parents informed about their children's progress. She works with parents to help children become independent in their personal care.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 obtain a valid paediatric first-aid qualification that is relevant for workers caring for young children and babies 30/12/2016

p.2

Due Date

 improve teaching so that children benefit from sufficient levels of challenge to help them make consistently good progress. 06/01/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 review the organisation of toys and play equipment to encourage children to explore fully  strengthen the process for self-evaluation to prioritise areas that need be addressed promptly, including professional development needs, to enhance teaching practice.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities as the childminder played with children.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation including records of children's learning, risk assessments and some policies. The inspector spoke to the childminder about how she evaluates the effectiveness of her provision.  The inspector talked with the childminder and children at appropriate times and observed the quality of teaching. The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.  The inspector checked the qualifications and training of the childminder, along with evidence of suitability.  The inspector considered the views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder's systems for self-evaluation are not thorough enough to help her promptly identify weaknesses in her practice. For example, she did not identify that her first-aid certificate was about to expire imminently on the day of the inspection, which compromises children's safety. The childminder has made some improvements since her last inspection to help children learn. For example, she checks children's progress to address any gaps in their development. However, she has not made full use of further training opportunities to ensure her teaching practice is consistently good to secure children's good progress over time. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has attended safeguarding training. She is aware of her responsibility to protect children from harm and to report any concerns to the appropriate agencies.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Teaching is not consistently effective. For example, the childminder's interactions with children do not build on what they already know and can do, particularly to challenge their thinking skills and extend their learning further. The childminder observes children and plans some activities to help them develop. For example, she provides learning experiences to help older children gain the skills they need for school such as learning to write their names. The childminder is generally encouraging and provides children with suitable help. For example, she supports children's imaginative play such as when making suggestions of scenarios they could act out while playing with small-world toys. She listens to children carefully and gives them time to respond to her questions.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Some resources and toys on offer are difficult for children to reach and see such as those stored in stacked large boxes. Children are not fully motivated to explore and learn. The childminder has effective arrangements in place to help children to experience a smooth transfer from home into her care. She supports children to develop positive relationships with each other and helps them behave appropriately. Children have daily opportunities for fresh air, exercise and outdoor play. They receive support to take responsibility for managing some daily tasks such as helping to tidy away the toys. Children enjoy praise for their achievements and they are growing in confidence.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are emotionally secure. For example, they talk confidently to the childminder, while offering their comments. They develop suitable social skills and learn to play alongside other children such as when they attend group activities. However, due to weaknesses in teaching practice, children do not achieve as well as they should.
