This provision is good

 The nursery is led and managed effectively. The manager has a good understanding of the early years foundation stage and supports staff effectively in meeting the needs of all children.  Staff have a good understanding of how children learn. They regularly observe children's play and get to know them well. Overall, they work well as a team to motivate and inspire children to explore and experiment.  Well-qualified staff are positive role models. They promote the use of good manners and appropriate behaviour consistently. Staff use praise effectively to motivate children during activities and to support their self-esteem.  Children are very settled in this welcoming and well-resourced nursery. Activities are planned to provide challenge and to interest and engage children. Children are included and valued and this supports their emotional well-being.  Parents speak highly of the care their children receive and of the fun activities provided

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Self-evaluation does not have the exceptional detail required to raise all aspects of practice to outstanding levels and to include the views of staff, parents and children.  Parents are not encouraged to share information from home consistently to further enhance their child's learning in the nursery.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the self-evaluation process, so that priorities for improvement are sharply focused and challenging, and includes the views of all parents, staff and children  strengthen ways to support parents to share information about what children can do at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the premises.  The inspector observed activities and the quality of teaching indoors and outdoors.  The inspector sampled children's assessment records, planning documentation and a range of other records, and policies and procedures.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of staff working with children, the provider's self-evaluation and improvement plans.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The manager is fully aware of the need to inform Ofsted of any changes to the nursery, the suitability of herself or staff. Staff are secure in their understanding of what they should do if they have a concern about a child's welfare. Ratios are adhered to at all times and effective staff deployment helps ensure that children are supported in their play and kept safe. Good recruitment, vetting and induction procedures help to ensure that staff are suitable to work with children. Clear policies, procedures and risk assessments are in place. These are reviewed regularly and well understood by all staff. Supervision sessions are in place and staff are encouraged and supported to further their professional development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is consistently good. Staff introduce new words as children play. They talk to children about what they are doing and ask questions to develop their skills further. Staff encourage children to develop their number skills, count and recognise different shapes. For example, during a focused activity children are supported to count to five as they stick eyes on paper penguins. Children enjoy taking part in music and movement sessions and display good physical skills. They are encouraged to count during everyday routines and sing number songs. Staff are flexible and encourage children to follow their interests. They help to extend children's learning, offering additional resources and using a variety of questioning techniques. Staff support children's communication and language skills well. They play at babies' level maintaining eye contact and model simple words, such as animal names.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff build strong attachments with children. Children enjoy daily outdoor play in a varied environment, which helps support their physical well-being. They demonstrate a healthy attitude to risk taking in a safe way. Staff supervise children sensitively to give children good opportunities to develop their skills and confidence in their own abilities. Children play safely and their behaviour is consistently good. Before they eat children are encouraged to wash their hands and staff explain why this is important. Mealtimes are relaxed and social experiences for children. Children are given choices and older children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for simple tasks. For example, they serve themselves at the breakfast bar and clear away their left over food. Staff are calm and friendly role models who show children how to listen to and respect other people.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are active and confident learners. They have a very positive attitude to learning. They are happy, highly engaged and independent in their play. Babies enjoy exploring their surroundings as they play. Children are working within the expected age range for their age and are making good progress in their learning. They display excellent social skills and they are confident and self-assured. This helps to prepare them for the next stage in their learning and eventual move on to school.
