Inspection activities
The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and the children in her care. The inspector held discussions with the childminder about children's learning and of how she reflects on the quality of her service. The inspector viewed the parts of the premises used for childminding and observed what children are able to do. The inspector looked at a range of documentation including risk assessments, children's records and the childminder's policies and procedures. The inspector took into account the views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder understands the importance of developing her professional skills and involves others in improving her practice. For instance, she works with other childminders to share ideas and help to improve children's outcomes. Furthermore, she finds out about any changes to legislation in childcare to help her implement them and ensure her setting is up to date. The childminder implements effective systems to check on children's progress, helping her identify and address any gaps in their learning. Safeguarding is effective. She knows the procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child's welfare. She recognises the signs of a child being at risk and knows how to report it.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children play in a caring, friendly environment and they confidently choose the activities in which they wish to engage. The childminder follows their interests to help encourage their involvement and motivation. Children concentrate well and are keen to join in. They enjoy playing imaginatively, such as during role play activities, and develop their creative thinking well. The childminder plans good opportunities for children to develop their confidence and interactions with others such as when attending play groups. Children have a range of ways to develop their communication skills. For instance, the childminder asks questions to encourage them to share their ideas and supports them to develop their sentences. The childminder works with parents generally well. For instance, she shares ongoing information with parents about their children's learning and development.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children eat nutritious foods and learn about healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, they are active and enjoy outings, such as to the local park, to develop their physical skills and well-being. The childminder supports children well to develop an understanding of following good hygiene practices. For instance, she teaches them to wash their hands before eating. Children have good opportunities to develop their understanding of diversity. For example, they read books that reflect the different people in the community and learn to value and respect others' uniqueness. The childminder regularly assesses risks in all areas that children use, in order to identify and remove any hazards.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points and learn a range of skills that prepares them well for their future learning. For example, younger toddlers learn to use toys with control, such as a toy pram, developing good walking skills while pushing it. They learn about nature. For example, they observe and talk about the childminder's pet fish and develop their understanding of living things.
