Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant update their safeguarding training regularly. The childminder has a good understanding of how to protect children from extreme views and harm. She makes sure her assistant and students on placement have a good awareness of what is expected of them. The childminder coaches, supports and monitors the assistant's practice effectively. For example, the childminder carries out formal appraisals of the assistant's practice and identifies training needs. Children benefit from the childminder's and assistant's increasing knowledge and skills. For example, the childminder recently attended a course that has increased her ability to build on children's mathematical skills successfully. Children now show an increasing interest in counting and number activities.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a wide variety of activities and resources that meet children's learning needs. For example, children become absorbed in role play using the toy kitchen. They develop a good awareness of how things work, such as the toy microwave and kettle. The childminder encourages children to have a go and try new experiences. For example, children are keen to explore melting ice and find out what is hidden inside it. The childminder provides activities that help children develop good coordination, such as threading coloured straws onto dried spaghetti. Children showed good mathematical skills when they counted the colours and pieces of drinking straws.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is kind, caring and supportive. Children form strong emotional bonds with her. They enjoy her attention, and laugh and smile as they play with her. Children play happily alongside their friends. The childminder deals with any minor disputes calmly and sensitively. She successfully teaches children to share resources and show respect to others. The childminder creates a safe and child-friendly environment where children can play safely and independently. She actively encourages healthy eating, good personal hygiene routines and physical exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are prepared well for school and any gaps in their development quickly narrow. They are confident and independent and have good social skills. Children concentrate well and enjoy learning. They manage their own personal care needs well. They take on responsibilities and tasks willingly, such as helping to tidy up and preparing for mealtimes.
