Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Good 2

Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Good 2

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not completed the process of obtaining the relevant suitability checks for one of her assistants in good time.  The childminder administers medication without obtaining the appropriate written consent from parents and has not maintained a record of all medicines administered.  The childminder's evaluation of her setting is not always thorough enough to identify areas where further improvement is needed.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Appropriate supervision and training opportunities support assistants to develop the effectiveness of their teaching further.  The childminder is very passionate about her role and cares deeply about the children she looks after.  The childminder uses her qualifications well to identify where children are in their learning and takes appropriate action where areas of under achievement are identified. She seeks and implements advice from other professionals where necessary.  The childminder works extremely well with local schools and pre-schools. They share information about assessments and next steps in learning which enables them to work together to provide consistency of support for the children in her care.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Due Date

 ensure that Ofsted are provided with the necessary information to enable them to carry out suitability checks for assistants working on the premises 18/12/2015

p.2

Due Date

 obtain written permission for each and every medicine administered and maintain a record each time a medicine is administered to a child 27/11/2015

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that any person having unsupervised contact with children is suitable to be in regular contact with children. 27/11/2015

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the process of self-evaluation so that it is thorough enough to identify all areas where improvements are needed.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed all parts of the childminder's home used for childminding.  The inspector observed play and learning activities and spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector viewed documentation including evidence of suitability checks, children's details, learning journals and a sample of policies and procedures.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation and how this is organised to drive improvements that benefit the children.  The inspector took into account written feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a robust understanding of the procedures to follow should she have a concern about the welfare of a child in her care. The childminder has identified some priorities for development; however, she has not identified all areas of her practice that require improvement. The childminder does not have consent for the administration of some medicines. In addition, she has not maintained a record of all medicines she has administered. That being said, she always contacts parents if children require medication and follows the instructions on the label. The childminder is aware of her responsibility to notify Ofsted when she recruits assistants and ensures that Disclosure and Barring Service checks are carried out. However, the childminder has hindered Ofsted's ability to carry out further suitability checks on one of her assistants. This is because she has not returned the required

documentation in a timely manner. However, the assistant is never left alone with children and this minimises the impact.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is consistently strong. The childminder has a very good knowledge of where children are in their learning. Accurate assessments help the childminder to identify where children are in their learning and plan appropriate next steps. She provides a range of motivational activities which helps to extend children's learning further. For example, children enjoy making marks as they explore flour and water. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of how to support children's learning. Strategies, such as playing alongside children, help children to concentrate on their activities. Older children enjoy listening to stories. They listen carefully as the assistant reads stories to them. They demonstrate their developing literacy skills as they retell stories themselves and turn the pages one at a time. The childminder has a good relationship with parents. They share information regularly which means that children's

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Weaknesses in leadership and management mean that procedures to ensure children's welfare are not sufficiently robust. However, children are very settled and happy in the childminder's care. They develop very good relationships with both the childminder and her assistants. Children play in a clean and welcoming environment which helps to support their developing independence. Children play alongside other children well. Good support helps older children to develop patience when younger children sometimes take resources off them. The childminder supports children's emotional and physical needs well when they first start attending. She also supports children's transitions to pre-school effectively. One of her assistants works at the pre-school and this helps children to settle quickly.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning. They gain a good range of skills in preparation for the next stage in their learning and in readiness for school. For example, children begin to learn about letters and the sounds they make.
