This provision is good

 The childminder has effective policies and procedures in place to safeguard children and foster their welfare.  Children benefit immensely from the experiences they receive when taking part in purposeful activities that appeal to their interests and help them make good progress.  Children's personal, social and emotional skills are developing well. They enjoy a trusting relationship with the childminder and grow in confidence.  The childminder is keen to update her knowledge of childcare and attends training courses to help her achieve this. She regularly evaluates her practice to assess what works and where she needs to improve. The childminder also encourages parents' views to identify targets to improve the quality of the provision further.  The childminder's partnership with parents is good. An effective two-way flow of communication supports children's general well-being, learning and development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is not consistent in helping children to understand how to stay safe or to raise their awareness of safety.  The childminder misses opportunities to further develop children's understanding of diversity.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to strengthen their understanding of the importance of staying safe  extend opportunities to build on children's understanding of diversity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had discussions with the childminder about her role and responsibilities.  The inspector observed the activities and the childminder's interaction with the children throughout the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, which included training certificates, children's assessment records, policies and the register of attendance.  The inspector read parents' completed questionnaires.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder carries out daily risk assessments to identify and minimise hazards. She keeps and maintains relevant documents for the safe management of the provision, in order to support the well-being of children. The childminder's day is well-planned, allowing children time for active and quiet play, which helps them to feel secure. The childminder understands child protection issues and knows how to proceed if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder has addressed the recommendations set at the last inspection. This has led to improvements in children developing confidence to express themselves during simple discussions and to set up their own explorations to learn about the environment.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children very well from the outset. When children are new she obtains useful information from parents about their child's starting point in order to build on children's existing skills. The childminder regularly monitors children's learning needs. She uses efficient assessment systems to track children's abilities and plan for their next steps in learning. The childminder effectively supports children to develop their communication and language skills. For example, she uses simple words and phrases that children can easily understand. The childminder also repeats words and expands on young children's attempts to communicate, to help them move towards using whole sentences.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children benefit from a well-organised environment where they receive good support to help them feel secure and confident. Children play in a clean environment and they follow daily routines to help maintain their good health. The childminder follows children's individual routines for eating and sleeping to enable children to receive consistent care and contribute to their physical well-being. The childminder provides children with healthy and nutritious foods, which help them to develop good eating habits. Children engage in a good range of physical play indoors and outdoors, which helps to extend their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn an awareness of numbers and counting through daily experiences. Young children develop increasing control over their fine finger movements to enable them to become independent. They enjoy opportunities to explore texture and shape by using all of their senses. Children enjoy taking part in large group situations in the community, which helps prepare them for when they start nursery or school. Children make good progress from when they start at the setting.
