This provision is good

 The qualified childminder is well organised and has a good understanding of the early years requirements.  Partnerships with parents are strong. Parents give very good feedback on the quality of care provided for their children. For example, they feel that the childminder knows each child well and responds sensitively to their individual needs and preferences.  The childminder has clear expectations for what children can achieve. She supports them effectively to develop their skills and independence. For example, she provides a meaningful opportunity for them to practise their writing, as they add details to the daily calendar.  Children are happy and settled. They form strong attachments with the childminder, whose kind and affectionate manner puts children at their ease and helps them to feel safe and secure in her home.  The childminder has developed effective links with schools that children attend. She

regularly talks to the teachers to exchange relevant information about the children. This helps to support their well-being and provide consistency in their learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's professional development plans are not focused sufficiently well on improving the quality of her teaching to an outstanding level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

She spoke to the childminder about how she supports children's well-being and learning.  The inspector spoke to the children and assessed their experiences within the setting.  The inspector spoke to a sample of parents, and looked at written feedback to find out about their views on the service provided.  The inspector looked at a sample of the childminder's documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of any signs that might indicate a child is at risk from harm, and the procedures for reporting any concerns. She implements robust policies and procedures, such as regular risk assessments, to ensure that her home is safe. The childminder attends training and reads up on relevant information to revise her knowledge. For example, she has recently updated her understanding of safeguarding issues, to help her recognise where children might be at risk from exposure to extreme viewpoints. The childminder reflects upon her provision to identify where she can make improvements. She considers the opinions of parents and children, for example she uses questionnaires and regular discussions to find out their views.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children benefit from the childminder's positive interaction during their play. For example, during a game, she supported their understanding of numbers well, by encouraging them to count and compare how many cards each of them had won. The childminder has a good range of toys and resources, which interests and engages children of different ages. She consults children on what they would like to do and ensures that they have access to the resources they need to explore their ideas. For example, she had set up a 'dark den' with torches and coloured lights for children to investigate their interest in darkness and light. Children enjoy opportunities to express their creativity. For example, they had fun drawing pictures of each other and the childminder, thinking carefully about the colours they would use and the features they wanted to add.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children benefit from opportunities to be physically active and enjoy outdoor exercise, either in the childminder's garden or on visits to the park. The childminder ensures that children have choices. For example, toys and resources are accessible, so that children can select what they would like to play with. Children's health, hygiene and independence are encouraged well by the childminder. For example, staff use cooking activities as opportunities to introduce children to healthy foods and to encourage positive choices. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder is calm and consistent in the way that she manages children's behaviour. She helps them to gain an understanding of 'fairness' and to recognise how their actions might affect others. The childminder praises children appropriately during routines and activities, which helps them develop good levels of self- esteem and confidence.
