This provision is good

 The childminder provides a range of activities to engage children's interest successfully and complement their progress at school.  The childminder is effective in her communication with parents and the schools that children attend. These partnerships support the continuity of children's care, learning and development.  Children build strong relationships with the childminder. They are settled and secure in her care. This helps them to build good levels of emotional well-being.  The childminder places a strong focus on helping children to develop positive relationships with others. Children are very polite and behave very well.  The childminder's home is warm and welcoming, and has a good range of resources. Children confidently make choices in their play.  Children learn about the similarities and differences between themselves and others. For example, they visit a day centre for adults with additional needs. Overall, they learn

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not seek the views of parents fully to help her evaluate the provision and drive continuous improvement.  On occasion, children do not have enough opportunity to develop their independence, such as cutting up their own fruit at snack time.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 encourage children to be more independent, particularly so they learn to manage some daily tasks for themselves  strengthen the self-evaluation process to include the views of those who use the setting.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector asked the childminder questions throughout the inspection to establish her understanding of the statutory requirements.  The inspector viewed some of the childminder's documents, including her policies and risk assessments.  The inspector viewed the areas used by the childminder and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date and has a good understanding of what to do if she has a concern about the welfare of a child. For example, she recognises indicators that a child may be at risk of being exposed to extreme ideas about right and wrong. The childminder keeps her skills up to date. She attends a range of courses and works well with other professionals to sharpen her teaching skills. For example, she volunteers at the schools that children attend and shares ideas to help develop her own professional knowledge. The childminder provides enjoyable and exciting activities that engage children. For example, they talk about changing seasons and the colours in their autumn pictures.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good overview of children's individual development and uses this knowledge well to provide interesting play experiences. She is aware of what to do if she is concerned about a child's development and works effectively with schools to meet specific needs. She shares information with parents about what their children have been doing so that they can extend children's interests further at home. The childminder encourages children to draw effectively on their previous experiences. For example, she talks about what happens at Christmas time and they discuss last year's event, which they use to plan more events for the forthcoming period.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is effective in her approach to teaching children about good health. She ensures children have plenty of exercise and fresh air, such as daily walks to and from school as well as visits to the park. They learn about the importance of healthy eating, such as growing their own vegetables in the childminder's garden. The childminder sets clear boundaries for children and older children act as good role models to the younger children. For example, they frequently remind them of how to behave, such as not shouting indoors. Overall, children's behaviour is good. The childminder praises children and acknowledges their efforts. For example, she praises them for doing 'lovely' colouring. The childminder makes children aware of risks. For example, while on the trampoline, she reminds them of how to keep safe, and when visiting the park, they know they must always stay together and to be careful of wet slippery leaves.
