This provision is good

 Overall, children make consistently good progress in their learning and development. They enjoy a range of activities and develop skills that help them prepare for their next stage of learning.  Children are positive and kind towards the childminder and each other. They communicate well and share space and resources with ease.  The childminder effectively considers, and continuously improves, her setting. She implements changes that benefit children and effectively promotes their learning and development.  The childminder has built good relationships with parents and staff at the local pre- school. Children enjoy a shared understanding and a consistent approach to their learning and development requirements. The childminder understands how best to support children with special educational needs and those with disabilities.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently plan opportunities quite as well as possible for children who prefer to learn outdoors.  Opportunities for children to explore a broad range of materials and media are not as effective as the support for learning in other areas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend further the opportunities for children who prefer to be and learn outside, to enrich their all-round development and progress  provide more opportunities for children to explore different media and materials to support their knowledge and understanding of the world and creativity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children.  The inspector took the written views of parents into account.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder  The inspector conducted a leadership and management discussion with the childminder.  The inspector looked at documentation, including the childminder's safeguarding policy.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder implements effective safeguarding procedures and understands how to protect children's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder successfully identifies training programmes that have a positive impact on her understanding of children's needs. For example, she has recently learnt about the importance of building strong bonds with children. This has helped her work more closely with children and their families. The childminder evaluates children's experiences and makes focused improvements. For example, children are able to select and return resources, and this helps to improve their independence in readiness for school. The childminder monitors children's learning and plans for their next steps accurately.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is skilled at supporting and extending children's language development. For example, she reads with them and adds nursery rhymes and finger puppets to help the story come to life. The childminder provides resources that are well-thought-out with children's stage of development in mind. For example, children enjoy using musical instruments and find out about the different sounds they can make. The childminder has developed an exciting indoor learning environment that children are keen to explore. For example, children develop their understanding of information technology as they play with a toy blender and kettle in their imaginative role-play area.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder encourages children to develop positive social skills. For example, children sit nicely at the table when they eat and learn to say 'please' and 'thank you'. Children get lots of exercise and fresh air. They improve their physical skills through activities such as running and balancing in the garden. Children learn to play well together, respect each other's feelings and take turns.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are content and settled while they play. Their emotional needs are catered for well. Children enjoy activities that help them develop particularly well in mathematics. For example, they count and sing number rhymes with the childminder. Children develop a positive attitude towards learning.
