This provision is good

 Children enjoy learning through play and they make good progress. The childminder has secure knowledge and the necessary skills to help children learn and develop securely.  The childminder successfully observes and assesses children's progress and plans the next steps for their learning carefully.  The childminder carries out thorough risk assessments of her home and for outings to keep children safe.  Good use of self-evaluation helps the childminder to reflect on the quality of her provision and how she can further develop her service. She builds on her existing good skills by, for example, attending training, sharing information with other childcare providers and using information from websites.  The childminder makes good use of pre-school settings to offer children a wide range of experiences and to help them develop good social and physical skills.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder does not make the best use of different opportunities to develop children's early literacy skills.  The childminder does not help children to learn enough about themselves and how they compare to others from contrasting backgrounds.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed and evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records and planning, and discussed the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their written views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps up to date with local child protection procedures and changes in legislation to protect children. She knows the signs which may cause concern about a child's welfare. Since the last inspection, the childminder has completed suitability checks for household members. In addition, she has developed her self-evaluation routines to benefit children's learning outcomes. The childminder checks children's progress to quickly identify where they may need to catch up in their learning. Parents are complimentary about the childminding service they receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder understands how to help children make good progress in their learning. She provides a good range of toys and activities, which appeal to children's interests, age and stage of development. The childminder encourages children's imagination and creativity in various ways, such as during role play and art and craft activities. Children develop good pencil control in preparation for writing, for example, when they draw with pencils and chalk. The childminder helps parents to extend their children's learning at home. In addition, she provides parents with information using, for example, notice boards, daily diaries and text messages.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well and they respond enthusiastically to praise. The childminder gives gentle reminders to encourage good manners. Children learn about the importance of eating healthy foods and following good hygiene routines. They use a variety of apparatus to encourage skills such as climbing and balancing. The childminder makes good use of pre-school settings to offer children a wider range of experiences and to extend their social and physical skills. Children find out about living things, for example, as they collect leaves and pine cones and feed goats.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good communication and language skills and they extend the range of words they use. Children become more independent, for instance, as they help tidy away toys, prepare snacks and begin to dress themselves. They learn to recognise colour, number, shape and size. Children find out how things work, for example, as they press buttons on a toy telephone, camera and kettle. The childminder prepares children well for moving on to the next stage in their education.
