This provision is good

 The childminder has made improvements to her practice since the last inspection. She has reviewed her planning and now ensures that she focuses on the prime areas of learning for the youngest children. In particular, she is working to promote children's speaking and listening skills in as many activities as possible.  The childminder is making effective use of the latest guidance documents to help her accurately evaluate children's level of development and their progress over time. She regularly observes children, using what she sees and hears to help her plan further activities and to identify where children need help to make progress.  The childminder promotes children's well-being effectively. She is tuned into children's feelings and emotions. She enthusiastically shares their joy and excitement at their achievements.  The childminder works closely with parents. She keeps them well informed about

children's daily experiences and has been successful in getting them to share information about what children achieve at home.  The childminder is successfully evaluating her practice. She is identifying aspects of her practice that can be improved and setting herself goals to achieve.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is sometimes too quick to offer support and to do things for children when they find tasks challenging.  The childminder is not always getting sufficient detail from parents about children's stage of learning when they first attend. This makes it hard for her to build on what they know and can do when she begins looking after them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide further opportunities for children to persevere when they are presented with a challenging but achievable task  expand the initial information gathered from parents to include details about children's developmental stage to help establish their starting points at the earliest opportunity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder, including how she monitors and evaluates her own practice. The inspector spoke to children as they played.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including policies, evidence of the suitability of the childminder, her assistant and other adults in the house. She looked at children's development and assessment records, the safeguarding procedures and the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents. She spoke to parents during the inspection and looked at letters and emails they had provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant undertake regular training to keep them up to date with the latest local procedures for making a child protection referral. The childminder offers children a welcoming and safe environment in which to play. She has established good relationships with parents, successfully engaging them in their children's learning once they are settled in her care. The childminder is working with other early years settings that children attend. This helps the childminder to gain an all-round picture of children. The childminder reviews her assistant's practice to ensure that he has the necessary skills to protect the safety and well-being of children in her absence.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's learning through play. She offers them good opportunities to explore their creativity and physical skills as they build with wooden blocks. Children show their good mathematical skills as they count the blocks in the towers and wall. They enjoy experimenting with small pegs, placing them carefully into boards to make uniform patterns. The childminder gives children lots of time for talking. She supports children who speak English as an additional language to use both languages in their play. The childminder is effectively including opportunities for children to learn about their own culture and those of other minded children. She uses the special occasions well, providing arts and crafts activities and new food for children to try as part of the celebrations.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well. They enjoy interacting with the childminder as they play and relish the attention she gives them. The childminder gives children lots of choices. Children show they know their own minds as they pick out the different toys and resources. Older early years children show they can be responsible and helpful. For example, they are keen to help with putting away toys when they have finished with them. The childminder helps children to develop good relationships with others. She encourages them to share and work together. Older children show younger ones how the push-button toys work. They demonstrate how to make the lights flash and how to make the sounds, before offering the toy for others to try. Children enjoy walking and being out in the fresh air. They visit parks, open play spaces and the local shops. The childminder works closely with parents to meet children's dietary needs.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children are making good progress in their development. They are becoming increasingly independent in their self-care. They are supported and encouraged to use the toilet and to wash their own hands. Children are interested in books and making marks as part of their developing early writing skills. They are eager to explore shapes and numbers as they play. The childminder supports children's interest in learning about the world around them. Children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning, such as school.
