This provision is good
The childminder reviews his practice and uses information from professional development opportunities to make changes that benefit the children. The childminder has good relationships with parents. They have a good two-way flow of information about children's care, learning and development. They work together well to support children to make good progress. The childminder monitors children's progress well. He plans experiences to meet children's needs and interests well. Children are eager to join in and motivated to learn. The childminder provides welcoming and stimulating environments for the children. Children make choices about how they want to learn and develop good self-esteem and confidence.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder occasionally misses signals and does not always respond quickly to children when they want him to join in their play. The childminder misses opportunities to encourage children to think, make suggestions and express their ideas.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's teaching in his home and outside. The inspector took into account the views of parents through their written testimonials. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of children's learning with the childminder. The inspector spoke with the childminder, co-childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector sampled paperwork and computerised records, including children's records and the childminder's planning and self-evaluation.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder uses information from professional development opportunities and feedback from his co-childminder, the parents and children to plan changes to the provision. For example, he is setting up a woodworking area for the children where they can experience using different tools and explore natural materials. He has built good relationships with other providers and shares information effectively about what children are doing to provide consistency in children's learning. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands his responsibility to support children's welfare. He has reviewed his policies and risk assessments with his co-childminder to make sure they keep children safe as they play.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder watches the children and provides activities based on their interests to support their learning and development. He helps children learn about the natural world, such as through creating pictures on sticky plastic with leaves they had collected in the park. Children use their imagination well. For example, they talked on the toy phone and persisted in getting the childminder's attention to join in with using the other phone to carry on the conversation. The childminder teaches children mathematics. For example, he helped children count the number of beads in the tower they had built.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder helps children to respect each other and to show care and consideration for others. He offers sensitive support when they have disagreements. For example, he reminds them to wait for their turn with a favourite toy train and to help re-build the broken track. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder helps children to manage risks and develop good physical skills. For example, he supported children to climb up the wooden slope to the slide and helped them work out how they could get down. The childminder teaches children about making healthy choices in relation to food, such as through talking about how the food they eat provides energy and helps them grow.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They develop good self-care skills. For example, they remind the childminder that they need to use soap to clean their hands and they use cutlery to eat with at mealtimes. Children persevere at self-chosen tasks, such as when they continue trying the different pieces until they complete the puzzle. Children are learning to express their needs well. For example, they use their words to tell others when they do not want them to take the toy or if they need their nappy changed. Children are well prepared for their future learning, including pre-school and school.
