This provision is good

 The childminder knows the children's interests and learning styles well. She plans meaningful experiences that build on what children already know. Children make good progress from when they first start in the setting.  Children are happy and confidently move around the childminder's house, accessing resources and leading their own play. The childminder uses a kind, sensitive manner with children and encourages them to share, be polite and follow simple rules.  Partnerships with parents are well developed from the outset. Parents contribute towards children's starting points and are kept informed of their child's ongoing learning and progress. The childminder readily shares information throughout the day so parents feel included and part of their child's learning experiences.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make best use of her local environment to enhance children's understanding of community and the wider world.  Children do not have many opportunities to enhance their development by engaging in sensory play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to learn about the environment and local community  review the resources and opportunities for children to readily explore sensory play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed areas of the premises used for childminding purposes.  The inspector looked at samples of children's assessment folders and records, and a range of other documentation.  The inspector discussed the process of self-evaluation with the childminder and how she obtains the views of all those that use her provision.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.  The inspector discussed the children's development with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder makes good use of her links with local schools to update her knowledge and practice. She has an extended understanding of the signs that a child may be at risk including wider aspects such as fabricated illness and extreme religious views. Young children are supervised well and effective measures, including reminders about safety, help protect children. The childminder completes accurate and regular assessments and reviews children's progress in a timely way to help identify and close any gaps in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder responds to children's needs and interests and they behave well. They are given time to think as they explore and are sensitively supported to make links in what they are seeing and doing. The childminder supports children's development of early mathematics and problem solving. For example, children excitedly sort through tubs of colourful buttons and count, match colours and sort them into sizes. The childminder's good levels of support help them to develop extended levels of concentration. They maintain their focus on activities for a sustained period of time. Younger children make good progress in developing their language skills. The childminder makes good use of talking to children, thinking out loud and naming the actions they do. This helps to develop their understanding and gives them confidence to try new words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Relationships between the childminder and children are warm and respectful, and young children show that they feel safe and secure. The childminder encourages healthy lifestyles. She provides home-cooked meals and snacks and helps children understand the importance of good hygiene to support their well-being. She thoughtfully supports their ideas so that they know their views matter. For example, children choose which food they would like for their snack and are included in meal preparations. The childminder encourages outdoor learning and children enjoy exploring in the woods. They have fun climbing and balancing on the equipment at the park. Younger children rest according to their individual routines and needs. This helps refresh them, so that they can engage readily in activities on offer.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children demonstrate a good attitude to learning and engage well in activities. They enjoy finding things out for themselves. They develop good coordination as they match, stack and sort toys of different sizes and shapes. Children learn to understand and manage their personal needs in daily routines. They make good progress from their individual starting points and acquire the skills they need for school.
