Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not support parents to contribute information about their children's learning needs, skills and abilities. This does not support planning and challenging experiences from the start.  The childminder's observations and assessments lack the precision to ensure any gaps in children's learning are swiftly recognised and addressed.  The childminder's reflections on areas for improvement, including professional development needs, are not yet focused enough. They do not identify weaknesses in the quality of her teaching and provision overall.  Children cannot always make sufficiently independent choices about what they would like to play with. Resources are not easily accessible to them. This means children's play experiences are limited, which sometimes leads to them becoming less engaged.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are happy and settled. The warm and caring childminder gives them plenty of praise and encouragement. Children behave well.  Children enjoy healthy, nutritious snacks and meals. They benefit from fresh air and exercise daily. This helps them to understand about a healthy lifestyle.  Children attend groups where they learn to socialise with others and find out about the wider community. They explore the similarities and differences between themselves and others.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 gather high-quality information from parents about their child's learning on entry and use this to help guide planning and shape challenging experiences for children from the start 06/12/2016

p.2

Due Date

 improve the accuracy of observations and assessments that help identify and swiftly close any gaps in children's learning. 06/12/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the system for reflection that helps identify specific improvements, including professional development opportunities, that improve the overall quality of teaching and provision  provide more opportunities for children to make independent choices in their play that extend their experiences and engage them in learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector completed a tour of the areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's policies and procedures and evidence of the suitability of adults living at the premises.  The inspector took into account the views of a small number of parents during the inspection.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder's reflections on the quality of her service are insufficiently robust and she does not identify gaps in provision. Observations and assessments are not accurate enough to quickly identify any gaps in children's learning and address these. The childminder has attended mandatory training, such as paediatric first aid. However, she has not focused on the need to help improve the quality of her teaching through continuous professional development. Nevertheless, she does attend childminder network meetings and some training courses of general interest. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has written child protection policies and procedures. She implements these well to help keep children safe in her care. The childminder knows what to do if she has concerns about children's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Partnerships with parents are not used to make an initial assessment of children's learning and development on entry. This has an impact on the childminder's ability to plan for individual children's needs from the start. She does not always use her experience to ensure children are motivated and fully engaged by the planned activities and routines. They sometimes lose interest as they are not challenged. However, children enjoy painting and listen to stories read by the childminder. They show an ability to play imaginatively when sitting inside a large model car. Children pretend to travel to the shops to buy food. The childminder engages in conversation with the children and plays alongside them. She repeats words carefully and clearly. This helps children develop their communication and language skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children have limited access to toys of their choice. The organisation of equipment does not support children to play independently with a wide range of resources. This means the range of experiences offered is not stimulating enough to engage children throughout their time at the childminder's home. Nevertheless, children are supported to develop independence skills. They wash their hands before eating snacks and put on their own coats and shoes. Children discuss the nutritious snacks and meals that they enjoy at the childminder's home. They enjoy tasting new, exotic fruits for the first time. Children take part in activities based on festivals and celebrations, which helps them to understand their wider community.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children's progress is not consistently good enough. However, they enjoy playing alongside each other and form friendships. Children respond well to praise and encouragement. This helps to support their self-esteem and confidence. Overall, children are developing their independence skills. They acquire some of the key skills in preparation for the move to school.
