This provision is good

 The childminder helps children to gain important skills in preparation for school and to make good progress. For example, children are independent, secure and confident.  Effective partnerships with other early years providers and professionals help children receive any specific support they need to make progress.  Self-evaluation is effective. The childminder reflects on her practice to help her identify any weaknesses and successfully improve learning for children. For example, she regularly attends meetings for childminding professionals to evaluate her practice and gain more childcare knowledge.  The childminder monitors children's progress effectively. She knows the children well and carries out observations and assessments to help identify any gaps in their development and help them catch up.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to extend children's mathematical knowledge.  At times, the childminder does not fully support children to further develop their early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make the most of learning opportunities to build on children's developing mathematical skills  increase opportunities for children to develop their early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed younger children engaged in activities and the childminder's interaction with them.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and the parents at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's details, learning records, insurance and other relevant documentation.  The inspector looked at parts of the house used for childminding purposes.  The inspector observed children's play with the childminder and discussed children's learning and progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of how to identify any concerns about a child's welfare and inform the relevant agencies. She carries out risk assessments to identify and minimise hazards. The childminder regularly develops her skills and keeps updated with new legislation. For example, she now understands more about the reasons behind children's play and the importance of observing their patterns of behaviour to better support their individual learning. The childminder has built strong partnerships with parents and builds good levels of communication. For example, she shares information about what children have achieved in written diaries and she asks parents to share what children do at home, to support consistency of care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Overall, the childminder provides children with a wide range of good learning opportunities and interacts well with them. She supports children's early speaking skills well. For example, she encourages children to speak, asks questions and builds their vocabulary. The childminder supports children's physical development well. For example, during trips out to various groups children have plenty of opportunities to ride wheeled toys, climb, run and jump. The childminder encourages children to develop their imaginations effectively. For example, they represent their own ideas and thoughts through pretend play, such as shopping for food. Children have fun building towers of bricks and fixing puzzles.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model and is kind and considerate towards the children. Children learn to keep themselves safe during play and to behave well. For example, the childminder offers reminders of acceptable behaviour during play to help children understand the consequences of their behaviour. The childminder encourages children to begin to learn about differences and similarities between themselves and others. For example, she celebrates festivals with them and shares the variety of foods parents bring in representing their cultures. The childminder encourages parents to provide healthy foods for snacks and lunch and discusses children's dietary needs with them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident communicators and express themselves well. They understand routines and listen to instructions; they select their own resources and help to tidy away. Children feed themselves and are beginning to attend to their personal needs. They learn about the features in their local environment. For example, they enjoy a variety of visits to the local markets, parks and places to eat.
