This provision is good

 Teaching is good. Staff regularly observe children's play and plan activities that build on what children already know and can do. This helps to promote the good progress children make in all areas of learning.  Children clearly enjoy their time in nursery. Staff are enthusiastic and make learning fun. Children are very motivated and become engrossed in a wide range of appealing activities. This helps them to develop a positive attitude in preparation for later learning in school.  Staff have formed effective relationships with other settings and local primary schools. They share information about children's progress and achievements. This helps to provide a consistent approach to children's learning and development.  Children develop trusting relationships with staff and settle into nursery quickly. This helps to promote children's emotional well-being and they demonstrate high levels of self-esteem.

p.1

This provision is good

 Staff work alongside parents to reflect on the standards of care and learning they provide. They make clear plans for improvements to the nursery that have a positive impact on outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, staff do not use what they know about the most able children to challenge them to the highest levels.  Staff do not always gather enough information from parents about what children already know and can do when they first begin to attend.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 plan more precisely for the most able children and ensure they are supported to make the best possible progress  gather more information about children's abilities from parents when children first start and promote their learning and development more swiftly from the outset.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the manager and deputy manager. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the improvement plans and evidence of the suitability checks carried out on staff working in the nursery.  The inspector spoke to a small number of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

All staff are qualified, which contributes to their secure understanding of the ways in which children learn. They use a range of methods to build on their knowledge and skills. For example, they attend regular training courses and observe each other to share good practice. Furthermore, they are well supported by managers who have consistently high expectations. This helps to build on the already good quality of teaching. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff know what to do if they have a concern about a child's welfare. Effective risk assessments and procedures for dealing with accidents also help to keep children safe and well. Managers monitor the progress made by individuals and groups of children. They use their findings to plan effective educational programmes that support all children to make good progress in all areas of learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff know children well. They identify any areas where children may need extra support, and planning is responsive to children's individual learning needs. Staff provide an effective balance of free play and adult-led activities. They skilfully interact with children as they follow their lead during play. This helps to promote children's communication and language development. Children have many opportunities to explore and investigate as they take part in a wide range of creative activities. For example, they enjoy playing with many different types of dough. This contributes to the very good skills children demonstrate in this area of learning. Staff incorporate numbers and counting into activities and promote children's early mathematical skills very effectively. For example, children confidently match the correct number to a group of coloured buttons during a game.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have a strong sense of belonging in the nursery. They approach adults and other children confidently and share their experiences. Staff give children lots of praise and encouragement and support them to work together. Children develop a sense of respect and understanding for one another and begin to form friendships. Staff have high expectations and a consistent approach to managing children's behaviour. Children happily follow sensitive guidance from staff and behave well. Staff support children to meet their self-care needs effectively. This helps to promote their developing independence and prepare them for when they start school. Children benefit from nutritious meals and get lots of fresh air and exercise. This helps to promote their physical health and well-being.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who have special educational needs or disabilities, make good progress. Most children achieve within the range of development typical for their age and those who need additional support catch up quickly. Children develop good listening and attention skills as they join in group activities. They concentrate well and persevere in their learning. Children's emerging literacy skills are supported effectively through a range of appealing activities. For example, they copy and trace letters from their name in a tray filled with foam. This helps to prepare them for future learning. From an early age, children begin to consider others. They learn to cooperate, share and take turns.
