This provision is good

 The childminder carefully observes and assesses children's progress. She successfully identifies learning priorities and provides activities that help to meet them.  The childminder uses good teaching skills when interacting with children. For example, she makes effective use of everyday activities to extend children's mathematical skills. Children make good progress in their learning.  Children behave well and have a good relationship with the childminder. They are safe, settled, happy and confident. The childminder helps children develop a good understanding of the need to share and take turns.  Since the previous inspection, the childminder has built on the strong partnerships with parents and other settings who share the care of children. For example, there is a good exchange of information that enables them to work effectively together and meet children's care and learning needs well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to build further on children's independence.  The childminder does not consistently provide opportunities for children to build on their increasing interest in the world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to build on their already good levels of independence  provide further learning experiences for children to experiment and find out about the world around them.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's activities indoors.  The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation.  The inspector discussed childcare practice with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge of child protection procedures updated. She has a good understanding of how to protect children from extreme views and harm. The childminder takes effective safety measures that help keep children safe. For example, she carries out thorough risk assessments on the environment and when going on outings. Overall, the childminder successfully monitors her planning, resources and teaching to help ensure she meets children's changing needs and interests. For example, she does research and makes good use of websites and links with other childminders to gain new ideas of interesting learning experiences that engage children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a wide variety of challenging activities that children enjoy. For example, at the inspection, they explored coloured dried rice and listened to the sounds it made when it trickled through their fingers onto a tray. The childminder used the opportunity well to extend children's language skills and vocabulary further. For example, she asked children questions about what rice felt like and introduced words like 'tickly'. They talked together about how pouring rice sounded like falling rain. Children show good imagination, for example, when playing with play food.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form strong emotional bonds with the childminder. They enjoy it when the childminder engages in their play. For example, children laughed and corrected the childminder when she playfully mixed up coloured objects and put them in the wrong places. Children develop good control and coordination. They take part in a variety of physical activities such as crawling through a play tunnel. Children develop healthy lifestyles and adopt good personal hygiene practices. The childminder builds effectively on children's strong social skills, for example, by taking them to group activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop well in the skills they need to be ready for the move to school. They are keen to try new activities and enjoy investigating things for themselves. Children use different forms of technology with confidence and skill. They concentrate well and become absorbed in play with a purpose. Children show they are confident and clear speakers, for example, when they recall and talk about previous events. They develop good early writing skills, for example, when they draw using a variety of resources.
