This provision is good

 Partnerships with parents are successful. For example, regular information sharing involves parents fully in their children's development, which enables them to contribute effectively to their ongoing learning.  The childminder is caring, kind and thoughtful. She knows the children well and provides them with good levels of emotional security. Children are self-assured, happy and confidently explore their surroundings.  Children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder plans a range of activities that reflects the children's interests. The children show good levels of concentration and determination as they complete puzzles.  The childminder keeps her home safe. Children make their own choices about their play and receive support to develop their play and ideas, for example, as they build a train track.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the best use of the outdoor area to help extend children's learning experiences.  Children have fewer opportunities to strengthen their understanding of their own lives and those of others in their community.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 review the range of learning opportunities for children in the outdoor environment to help increase their learning further  increase opportunities for children to learn more about events in their own family, culture and about other people's lives in their local community.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector and childminder discussed the systems she uses to observe and record children's progress, and the documents she uses to support her work.  The inspector completed observations of the children as they engaged in activities with the childminder.  The inspector looked at the rooms and resources the children use.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of how to recognise any signs and symptoms of child protection issues. She is confident about what she should do about any concerns she may have. The childminder keeps her childcare knowledge and skills up to date; she meets with other professionals and exchanges ideas with other childminders. The childminder effectively evaluates the quality of her work and considers ways to make improvements which have a positive impact on improving children's outcomes for their future. For example, she actively seeks training to increase her knowledge, which helps develop children's learning experiences and ensure children remain safe in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses a range of teaching methods to engage the children in learning. She regularly assesses children's progress and tracks their development, to identify areas where she needs to provide additional activities to enhance their learning. The childminder knows the children well and uses their interests to plan for them. For example, she knows the children enjoy listening to and taking part in music and movement sessions. She arranges musical instruments to be accessible and children choose what they would like to play. The children use their imagination making pretend cups of tea for their friends and the childminder. Children develop good listening skills. They learn to be independent and to use their developing skills confidently. For example, the childminder skilfully encourages children to complete small tasks such as tidying away and completing puzzles.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a caring environment for children to learn and play. The childminder helps them to understand about being kind and sharing with their friends. She is skilled at using positive ways to manage their behaviour such as showing children how to play cooperatively or distracting them from unwanted behaviour. Children learn about healthy lifestyles effectively. They benefit from eating nutritional foods, such as fresh fruits, and regularly drink water. Children are happy and contented. They receive lots of praise, which helps motivate them to have a positive attitude to learning.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children use their language skills well. For example, they join in singing their favourite songs while tapping out rhythms on instruments. This builds on their understanding and gives them opportunities to practise their words. Children develop useful skills that help to prepare them for their next steps in learning and eventual move to school.
