This provision is good

 The childminder is well organised. The quality of teaching is good and children make good progress.  Children enjoy a broad range of stimulating activities and experiences that engages their interest for long periods.  The childminder follows children's individual interests well and supports new skills. They have good opportunities to make independent choices in their play.  The childminder has met previous recommendations well from her last inspection. She welcomes the support of her local authority, such as through home visits, and seeks out relevant training to develop further her knowledge and teaching skills.  Children learn to respect others in the community that are different to them. They learn to manage their own behaviour and develop good levels of self-esteem.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder is less successful in using information she gains from her observations to influence the way she monitors children's progress and keep others more up to date about children's individual development.  The childminder does not engage parents as well as possible in the information gathering process about children's initial stages of development, when they first start attending.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of information taken from assessments to precisely monitor and share children's progress with others and to offer more targeted support  give parents every opportunity to share full information about their children's learning from home when they start.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's teaching skills and her interaction with the children during play and care routines.  The inspector and childminder jointly observed children and discussed teaching and learning.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and their feedback at inspection.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times.  The inspector looked at a sample of the childminder's documentation including the childminder's training, policies and procedures, children's learning records, and self- evaluation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows what steps to take if she has concerns about a child's safety or welfare. She implements policies and procedures, and effectively shares these with parents. Risk assessments are carried out daily, and the childminder ensures that the environment is safe and secure, so children can play safely. The childminder effectively evaluates the service that she provides. She considers the views of parents and her local authority when making changes to her practice. Parents comment positively about the childminder.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder offers a good range of resources and activities to help children's development in all areas of learning. Children play enthusiastically such as when they make music with the shakers they have made themselves. The childminder introduces counting and recognising shapes and colours, helping children's mathematical understanding. The childminder supports children's language and literacy development well. For example, children enjoy singing rhymes and looking at books, and explore early writing activities. Children benefit from a range of experiences, such as visits to community groups, to help broaden their learning. For example, children engage with the elderly at the community centre, visit the library storytelling sessions or go to the park to collect leaves for their displays.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder establishes good relationships with children, and children have close bonds between each other. Children are praised for their efforts and achievements and this encourages them to be motivated learners. For example, they take on roles to help clear away and set out play; this gives them a sense of responsibility and independence. The childminder supports healthy eating and she gives advice to parents if they wish to provide food themselves. The childminder plans opportunities for children to have a positive outlook to a healthy lifestyle. Children develop skills in taking care of their own bodies such as washing hands before eating. The childminder keeps children safe. Children learn how to climb the stairs and how to carry toys safely.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress to help them in moving on to school. Children enjoy making choices about their play. They are confident individuals, who make friends and gain skills to support them in readiness for school. For example, they are keen to learn to write, address problem solving, and use language very well to communicate.
