p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The provider has not kept Ofsted informed about a change in circumstances regarding the manager's recent absence for a period of time. The quality of teaching is variable. During the manager's recent absence, staff did not carry out assessments of new children to accurately plan targeted experiences and opportunities to support their next steps in learning. Children are not always best supported to reach to their full potential. Staff have not been consistent in carrying out the required progress check for children aged between two and three years. Staff share information with parents about their child's day. However, they do not share information about the progress that children are making in their learning.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Staff spend time making sure that all children settle well. Children build secure relationships with each other and the warm, caring staff team. This effectively supports children's personal development and their emotional and physical well-being. The manager makes sure there are plenty of resources and activities available to support children's play. She ensures that there are sufficient trained staff to support children's play routines and maintain required ratios at all times. Staff are good role models and use positive praise to support children's confidence and self-esteem. Children behave well and develop an understanding of rules and boundaries.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the nursery manager. The inspector held a meeting with the nursery manager. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the nursery's self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery. The inspector spoke to a small group of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The provider has failed to notify Ofsted of a change to the health of the manager that resulted in her being absent from the provision for a period of time. However, the provider ensured that a suitably qualified member of staff was able to take over in her absence. Safeguarding is effective. Staff are able to identify the possible signs of abuse or neglect and understand the correct reporting procedures. Regular risk assessments are carried out to make sure that the premises remain safe for children. The manager uses ongoing self- evaluation to review the setting and seeks the views of parents. This helps her to identify some areas for improvement and set targets for development. There is an appropriate programme for professional development to support staff in their role. The manager works alongside staff and observes their practice. This helps her to give guidance on good practice and ensure that the quality of their teaching is raised.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
In the manager's absence, staff have not assessed children's development sufficiently to help them effectively and swiftly identify and address any delays or gaps in their learning. This includes the progress check for children aged between two and three years. Consequently, all children are not making the best progress they could. Nevertheless, staff have a good understanding of how to support children in their communication and language development. Staff repeat words clearly so that children hear the correct way to pronounce them. Staff support children to follow their interests in self-chosen play. Children enjoy doing jigsaws and staff use appropriate questions to support their mathematical learning. For example, they ask children to identify colours, count items and identify shapes. Information relating to children's ongoing progress and development is not consistently shared with parents. This means that there are less opportunities for

parents to contribute to learning records and share information from home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Overall, arrangements to promote children's well-being are effective. The indoor and outdoor environment are stimulating and welcoming for children. Children have regular opportunities to develop their physical skills and frequently access the outdoor area. They enjoy painting activities and listening to the sounds they make when banging the wall instruments. Staff help children to learn to keep themselves safe. For example, they discuss the forthcoming Bonfire Night, using props to show children what it will be like and how to stay away from the fire and fireworks. Staff promote children's good health. Children are offered healthy snacks and help to prepare them.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children's personal, social and emotional development are promoted. They are encouraged to be independent and to value each other's differences. They gain a positive awareness of themselves and others. Children learn the basic skills they need to prepare them for the next stage in their education. Children are confident to share their thoughts and practise their early writing skills. Generally, children make steady progress in their learning.
