This provision is inadequate
Children are not adequately safeguarded. The childminder does not have an up-to-date knowledge of current child protection procedures in line with the guidance and procedures of the Local Safeguarding Children Board. The childminder is not confident about the process to follow if an allegation of abuse is made against her or a household member. The childminder does not ensure that she obtains up-to-date information about a child's needs for medicines before administering medication to children. In addition, the childminder does not always store children's medicines safely. The balance of adult-led activities and opportunities for free play does not provide young children with the best possible level of challenge because activities are sometimes over-directed. The childminder has not evaluated her practice thoroughly enough to identify where improvements need to be made to raise the standards.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children have good opportunities to meet and play with other children. The childminder makes the most of local playgroups and community events to help promote children's social skills. Partnerships with parents are established. The childminder regularly shares detailed information about children's progress, including how parents can support their children's learning at home. Parents comment that they are very happy with the service provided.

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector looked at children's assessment records and the planning documentation. The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all household members and of the childminder's qualifications. The inspector asked the childminder questions about her practice at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers spoken to on the day and from information included in the childminder's own parent survey.
p.3
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate
The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. The childminder has a poor understanding of current child protection legislation and wider safeguarding issues. In addition, she does not know what action to take in the event of an allegation being made against herself or a member of her family. The childminder can identify the signs and symptoms of abuse. However, she does not know who to contact to report a concern about a child in her care in line with Local Safeguarding Children Board guidance and procedures. The childminder does not obtain information to ensure she has up-to-date information about the need for medicines, including the time of the last dose, from parents prior to giving medication to a child. Furthermore, she allows children's medications to be stored in children's bags, which they have access to, and she does not check storage instructions. The childminder does not evaluate the service she provides to
p.4
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder interacts with the children as they play. For example, she counts with them to extend their mathematical skills. However, some of the activities provided do not have as much challenge as possible because they are overly directed by the childminder. Nevertheless, children are motivated and eager to join in with the activities they independently choose in the well thought-out playroom. The childminder carries out regular observations. She uses the information gathered to assess children's capabilities and plan for the next steps in their learning. The childminder tracks children's achievements appropriately to recognise what progress has been made and to identify and address any gaps in their learning.
p.4
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate
Weaknesses in safeguarding compromise children's safety and well-being. The childminder is warm and caring towards children, and she provides a good variety of resources to help children learn. She gives them lots of praise and promotes children's independence by asking them to help with small tasks. This enables children to develop their confidence and emotional skills in readiness for their future learning. The childminder sets consistent boundaries for good behaviour, sensitively reminding children of the need to share. The childminder promotes a healthy lifestyle for all children by ensuring they have opportunities for physical exercise, both indoors and outside.
p.4
Outcomes for children are good
Children are making good progress. They are developing their communication, language and mathematical skills. They are learning to understand and follow simple instructions. Children are gaining confidence and enjoy playing in the childminder's care. Younger children's literacy skills are beginning to develop. They enjoy singing songs and listening to stories. They are developing key skills they will need for the next stage of their learning.
