programmes for herself and her assistant.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the best use of the outdoor area as a learning environment for children who prefer to be outdoors.  At times, the childminder misses opportunities to build on children's interest in activities to fully explore their own ideas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 develop further the learning opportunities for those children who prefer to spend time outdoors  support children more consistently to explore their own ideas while they play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children indoors and outdoors.  The inspector looked at documentation, including children's learning journals.  The inspector conducted a joint observation and a leadership and management discussion with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with children and took the written views of parents into consideration.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder improves outcomes for children through the effective evaluation of her setting. For example, she has made targeted improvements to her indoor area and, together with her colleagues, has developed attractive playrooms where children engage in role play. Children develop a range of skills to help them as they move on to school. For example, they help at tidy-up time and learn to take responsibility for their actions. The childminder has built firm and effective links with parents, other settings and professionals. This helps children benefit from a shared understanding of their care and learning needs. The childminder monitors the performance of her assistant and offers appropriate support and mentoring to improve her expertise. This has a positive impact on outcomes for children. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of the signs and symptoms that could indicate concerns about a child's welfare and

knows the procedure to follow should the need arise.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children develop positive early reading habits as they interact with the childminder. For example, they take on a character and act out parts of a story and develop their understanding of story structure. Children are keen to take part. For example, they use a range of different materials and pretend to make eyeball and worm spaghetti. They develop their imaginations and use good social skills. Children have plenty of opportunities to improve their mathematical understanding. For example, they put pumpkins in order by size and begin to solve number problems.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children build lovely relationships with the childminder that help them feel settled and secure. For example, children are happy at nap time and use their own special teddies and comforters to help them settle down to sleep. Children are well behaved and play together well. For example, older children tell younger children stories and use props to make their ideas come to life. Children regularly play outdoors and get plenty of fresh air and exercise. The childminder continually praises children in their attempts to succeed and this gives them a firm platform from which to make progress.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop well with the childminder. They are secure, happy and confident. Children develop many skills to help them when they move on to school. Children play with enthusiasm and are engaged in the activities available to them.
