Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Good 2

p.1

Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Good 2

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not share information with parents about the procedure to follow if a child is not collected at the agreed time. She does not inform them about the required complaints investigation procedures.  The childminder does not fully consider ways of raising children's awareness of similarities and differences between themselves and others. Their learning with regard to different traditions, families and communities beyond their own experience is not fully promoted.  The childminder has not fully developed systems for evaluating her practice to identify strengths and areas for improvement. She has worked successfully with a representative of the local authority to address issues raised at the last inspection, but has not yet identified priorities that will sustain improvement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder observes and assesses children's levels of development and uses what she knows to plan effectively for their future learning.  The partnerships with parents and other settings that children attend are strong. Information is shared so that continuity of learning for children is addressed well. Parents share very positive views about the childminder's provision.  Children confidently express their opinions as they make decisions about their play.  Children's literacy development and mathematical development are addressed well by the childminder.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Due Date

 ensure that parents are made aware of the procedures that will be followed if a child is not collected at the agreed time 30/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that parents are aware of the required complaints investigation procedures. 30/11/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 extend opportunities for children to gain a greater awareness of similarities and differences in society and an understanding of different people in the wider world  implement effective systems for self-evaluation to identify and prioritise areas for ongoing improvement.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities as children played in the indoor play area.  The inspector observed an activity and discussed teaching methods with the childminder.  The inspector looked at evidence of the childminder's training and checked evidence of the suitability of all adults.  The inspector looked at a selection of children's assessment records and planning, policies and procedures and a range of other documentation.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has addressed issues raised at the last inspection with regard to improving her child protection knowledge. She is aware of the signs of abuse and neglect, and the local procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child's welfare. Safeguarding training and the documentation provided is enabling her to gain knowledge about the duty to prevent children being drawn into situations that may put them at risk of significant harm. The childminder values the support that she has been given by a representative of the local authority since the last inspection. However, she has not yet developed fully effective procedures for reviewing her provision, in order to identify targets for further improvement. The childminder is now able to implement child protection procedures if the need arises, and she has drawn up a policy for parents. However, parents are not informed of a procedure should they not

collect their child at the agreed time. Complaints information does not include reference to the required response timescales. The childminder ensures that potential risks in her home are effectively minimised.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children make good progress. They engage in imaginative role play, for example, as they build stories around dolls' house toys. Children enjoy listening to stories. They talk with the childminder about their favourite characters as they choose to draw them. Children identify that baking is one of their preferred activities. Their literacy development is supported well by the childminder as part of the activity. Children know that instructions are written in the recipe book. Their mathematical learning is promoted while they weigh ingredients. While mixing, children say,'We use a big spoon' and comment that the mixture 'goes a different colour'. They practise their good manipulative skills using a small spoon to deposit the mixture carefully into cake cases. Children create their own designs with icing sugar when the cakes are baked.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder creates a warm and welcoming environment. Children's good health is promoted appropriately. Children are physically active and eat healthy food. They behave well and their self-esteem is fostered as the childminder praises their efforts and achievements. Children develop an understanding of dangers and how to keep themselves safe. For example, they learn how to cross the road safely. They play with some resources that reflect a positive image of diversity. However, their learning about similarities and differences between people is not fully supported.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good skills, in readiness for the move on to pre-school and school. They manage their self-care needs independently and confidently make decisions about their play. Children's language skills are good. Pencil control is developing well. Children are learning to write their names and they are beginning to distinguish between letters and numbers. They count while they play and are beginning to understand simple addition and subtraction.
