This provision is good

 Children build very strong relationships with the childminder. They are settled and secure in her care, which helps to build good levels of emotional well-being.  The childminder plans a wide range of stimulating activities based on children's interests. Children make choices from a good variety of resources and play materials. They engage, concentrate and learn new skills during their play.  Children have opportunities to learn about the similarities and differences between themselves and others. They learn to respect and value others.  The childminder works well with other settings that children attend, such as school. The childminder's and teachers' shared approach helps to provide consistency for children's care and development. Children make good progress in their learning.  The childminder places a strong focus on helping children develop positive relationships with others. Children behave very well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently seek the views of parents to help her evaluate the provision to drive continuous improvement.  On occasion, the childminder does not give children time to talk about aspects of their familiar world, such as school and things they do at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 involve parents in the evaluation of the provision to help identify areas for development  help children talk more about aspects of their familiar world, such as school and things they do at home, to build on their self-confidence.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector spoke to parents of children to seek and consider their views.  The inspector viewed a selection of documents, including policies and risk assessments.  The inspector asked the childminder questions throughout the inspection to establish her understanding of the statutory requirements.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder updates her knowledge and understanding of safeguarding matters regularly. She understands what to do should she have a concern about a child. For instance, she knows the indicators that children may be at risk of exposure to extreme ideas about right and wrong. The childminder keeps her skills up to date. For example, she has attended a range of courses, including training to help her assess and monitor children's development more accurately. The childminder works well with parents to ensure that she meets their children's needs. She keeps parents informed and involved in their children's learning, which helps to provide continuity in their care and learning between their home and the childminder's setting.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children develop. She observes children closely and gets to know them well. She skilfully plans a variety of purposeful play activities, which motivate and engage the children. The childminder has good teaching skills and extends children's learning well. She uses children's interests to help complement what children learn at school. For example, during children's creative play she described new techniques, such as smudging the marks made with chalk to create a different effect. The childminder asked children questions to build on their mathematical skills, such as counting how many coloured pencils the children were using.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a wide range of opportunities to support children's physical well- being and good health. For example, she encourages children to take part in physical games and activities that provide them with regular exercise. The childminder teaches children to look after themselves. For instance, she reminds children to wash their hands before they eat and encourages them to eat nutritious meals and snacks. The childminder acts as a good role model and has a warm, caring approach. For example, she offers children gentle guidance and praise, which helps children learn to share and cooperate.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn a good range of skills that will help them at school. They choose what they want to play with from the wide selection of resources. Children are happy and settled. They behave well and learn to treat each other with respect. Older children who attend after school develop good physical skills and learn to play cooperatively as part of a group. For example, they enjoy games of football and tag in the garden. Children build on their creative skills, for instance, they use chalks and crayons to draw displays of fireworks.
