This provision is good

 Children settle well and develop good relationships with the childminder and other children. They are happy, confident and emotionally prepared for moving on to school or nursery. They typically make good progress, given what they know when they start.  The childminder reflects on his practice and has a clear idea about the strengths and areas to tackle to ensure further improvement. He has improved his service since the last inspection. There are good links with parents, who like his service.  The childminder effectively supports children's well-being and health. For example, children enjoy freshly cooked food each day and the childminder teaches them skilfully about healthy eating. Children behave well and enjoy being with him.  The childminder takes on board children's interests and suggestions to plan activities that motivate and engage the children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not assess children's progress carefully enough to provide the clearest picture of what children may need to learn next.  The childminder has not developed close enough links with other settings to help exchange information to ensure consistency of care and education of the children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 check children's progress more effectively to identify what teachers need to plan next to ensure children's good learning  strengthen links further with local nurseries that children may attend to ensure consistency of care and their well-being.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the interaction between the childminder and the children.  The inspector asked the childminder about his understanding of safeguarding and child protection.  The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, including registration and first aid certificates, children's assessments and a sample of policies.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps up to date with child protection procedures. He understands how to keep children safe and knows how to identify indicators that might suggest concerns about a child's welfare. His home is safe as he checks resources regularly. Children learn to keep themselves safe in the home and when on outings. For example, the childminder talks to the children about how to cross roads and stay close to him when out. He has a good understanding of early years requirements and has used knowledge gained from training to help improve what he provides. The environment is well organised to help children learn effectively.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder demonstrates a good knowledge of how to encourage children's learning across all areas. He particularly provides a wide range of opportunities for children to develop their physical skills. For example, children enjoy using large equipment in the local garden. Children have regular opportunities to learn about the natural environment and their experiences are extended through outings, such as to the science museum and exhibitions in the local area. The childminder works closely with his wife, who is a childminder at the setting, to ensure that children work together productively.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has very secure relationships with the children and their parents. Parents speak very highly of the childminder, describing the setting as 'a second home'. Children behave well. The childminder talks sensitively to the children about their behaviour and how it might make others feel. Children learn about families that are different from themselves through a range of different resources. The childminder extends children's knowledge in a variety of ways. For example, he takes children to cultural exhibitions in the local area. The childminder acts as a good example in how to deal with others and encourages children to use good manners.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children typically make good progress in all aspects of their care and learning. They have conversations about the stories they enjoy, toys they play with and things they see on outings. Children who are learning English as an additional language develop good skills in communication. Children learn the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed and are emotionally prepared as the childminder talks to them about what to expect when they go to nursery. Children are well prepared for moving on to school.
