This provision is good

 The childminder takes positive steps to keep children safe from the risk of harm. For example, there is a range of safety equipment throughout the childminder's home.  The childminder forms good partnerships with parents, other professionals and early years settings, to provide consistency in children's learning and care.  The childminder plans a range of exciting activities to extend children's interests. For example, children like visiting local groups, where they learn to mix with others and build good social skills.  The childminder acts as a good role model and children learn how to behave well. Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They become independent and confident, and make good progress for their next stages in learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to encourage children to practise their early writing, in particular for those who enjoy learning outdoors, to extend their literacy skills even further.  The childminder does not consider a broad range of ways to encourage young children to explore nature and learn more about the environment.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase children's access to more writing opportunities, in particular to support those children who prefer learning outdoors  build on opportunities for younger children to observe, explore and find out about the natural environment.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the childminder's home to assess children's safety, and to explore teaching and care practices.  The inspector sampled documentation, including the childminder's paediatric first aid certificate, policies, procedures and public liability insurance.  The inspector observed the childminder with the children as they engaged in play together.  The inspector and the childminder discussed the activities and resources on offer to different age groups of children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder fully understands her role and responsibility to protect children from risk of harm and knows who to contact in the event of a concern. The childminder has made good improvements to her practice since her registration. For example, she has extended the range of opportunities to enhance children's enjoyment of reading at an early age. The childminder accurately assesses children's development to identify and close any gaps in their learning. She reflects well on her practice and updates her professional knowledge, for example, she keeps abreast of changes to legislation. She values the views of parents and uses their suggestions well to support the continuous improvement of her provision, including outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well and effectively identifies their next steps in learning, such as through her accurate observation and assessment processes. She helps children to make good progress and develop the skills needed for starting school. Strong partnerships with parents enable the childminder to share children's progress with parents and involve them in their children's learning. Young children learn how to count and to recognise numbers and colours. For example, they count the number of blocks and then name the colours as they build several towers.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder forms good relationships with children, to help them feel secure, develop a positive sense of self and a good sense of belonging. She positively praises children for behaving well and is consistent in her approach. The environment is welcoming and well organised for all ages of children. This gives children opportunities to develop independence and confidence to make choices about what they wish to do or play with. Children enjoy outings, such as regular trips to playgroups, shops and the local children's centre, to develop their awareness of the wider community. The childminder ensures children's safety while on outings and conducts relevant checks to keep them safe at all times.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points. They develop the skills they need to prepare them for the next stages in their development and for school. For example, children enjoy using a variety of props and instruments as they dance and sing to their favourite songs, as they practise learning about rhyme and rhythm. They develop good social skills and know how to behave positively with one another.
