This provision is good
Children make good progress in all areas of their learning. The childminder plans exciting activities in response to their interests. She uses what she knows about children to identify their next steps in learning and to challenge them further in their play. Children are happy and confident. They actively explore the welcoming and stimulating environment. They build secure emotional relationships with the childminder who nurtures their confidence and self-esteem. The childminder encourages children to lead a healthy lifestyle. She supports them to follow good hygiene routines and to make healthy food choices. They benefit from well- planned outdoor experiences such as trips to drop-in groups and the park for exercise. The childminder works in partnership with parents and other providers to ensure a consistent approach to children's care and learning. Parents speak highly of the childminder and value all that she does for their family.
p.1
This provision is good
The childminder provides opportunities for children to develop an awareness of families and their traditions. She supports them to recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others and values the use of children's home languages in her setting.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to help children to develop their understanding of early counting and numbers. Children do not have many opportunities to practise early writing skills in their play.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

widen the opportunities for children to learn to count and use numbers in their play review the resources and opportunities for children to readily explore early writing.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector viewed areas of the premises used for childminding purposes. The inspector looked at samples of children's assessment folders and records, and a range of other documentation. The inspector discussed the process of self-evaluation with the childminder and how she obtains the views of all those that use her provision. The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together. The inspector discussed the children's development with the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the procedures for reporting child protection concerns and she has recently updated her safeguarding training. She is keen to continue to develop the service she provides. She takes advice from her local authority early years consultant and others. Since her last inspection, the childminder has made good improvements to her practice. She has developed ways to observe and assess children's starting points and progress effectively, to continually help them build on what they can do. She tracks children's progress to identify any gaps in their development and helps them to catch up. The childminder gives clear guidance to her assistant when he very occasionally works with her.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder effectively supports children's learning and engages in their play. She sensitively plays alongside children and follows their lead. The childminder is very successful at using children's interest to engage them. For example, during a playdough activity she helps them identify colours and shapes as they roll and mould the dough. Children enjoy exploring different materials as they make their own autumn pictures. For example, they use glue brushes with increasing skill as they stick the leaves they have collected to their tree picture. The childminder asks effective questions and gives children time to think about their response. She supports children's communication and language skills well. For example, as they read books the childminder builds on what children find interesting in the pictures to help them to recall and link them to experiences from home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are confident and happy in the childminder's home and have a close attachment to her. They have high levels of confidence and know where to find their favourite toys or ask for the items they want. The childminder provides healthy snack options and ample fresh air and exercise that help to contribute well to children's physical well-being. For example, children become confident swimmers as they swim in the childminder's pool in warmer weather. Children behave well. The childminder manages any minor disagreements very well and children learn the importance of sharing toys and taking turns.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress and are confident and motivated to learn. They become increasingly independent, making choices about what they want to do. Children listen carefully and follow instructions well. They are confident communicators and develop good early reading skills. Children gain a good range of skills for the next stage in their learning and the skills they need so they are ready for school.
