This provision is good

 The childminder knows children in her care well and offers an informal, relaxed approach to learning. She provides fun, high-quality learning experiences, that reflect children's interests and individual learning needs. She continually extends children's knowledge during conversations and activities. Children make good progress and acquire key skills for the next stage in learning.  The childminder provides a bright, welcoming and homely environment. Children are encouraged to make choices from the plentiful range of enticing toys and resources and lead their own play. They develop vital skills in perseverance, investigation and independence.  Children enjoy caring relationships with the childminder. She engages in sensitive care practices and is attentive to their needs, meaning children are happy, settled and emotionally secure in their surroundings. The childminder gets to know them well and values their individual personalities, which effectively builds their self-esteem.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder pays particular attention to children's health and dietary needs. She works hard with parents to provide for children with significant dietary restrictions to ensure that they have a balanced diet that is also enjoyable to eat.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not focus ongoing professional development opportunities precisely enough on raising the quality of her teaching to the highest level.  The childminder does not gather detailed information from parents about children's capabilities on entry to help her plan for their learning fully from the beginning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is knowledgeable about current child protection issues and how to keep children safe from harm. Self-evaluation is effective, accurately identifying strengths of the provision and aspects she would like to improve. Written policies and procedures are shared with parents, enabling them to make informed choices about their children's care. The childminder has made parents aware that she is in the process of updating her first-aid qualification. She regularly gathers the views of parents. Written responses in questionnaires demonstrate the high regard parents have for the childminder. They report that they are very happy with the care provided. Parents appreciate that the childminder is flexible to meet their changing childcare needs. They state that they appreciate everything she does for their children.

The childminder has a good knowledge of child development and how young children learn best through play. She gets to know children well through regular observations and accurate assessments of what they can do. Children are eager and motivated by the activities and experiences the childminder provides. They enjoy playing with her and respond well to her enthusiasm as she joins in with their play to extend their interest and enjoyment. Children's literacy skills are effectively developed. They have access to a cosy book area where they develop a love of books. Children see examples of print in the setting and begin linking letters to the sounds they represent. They have plenty of opportunities to practice their manipulative skills, make marks and develop their early writing abilities. The childminder skilfully incorporates numbers and mathematical language into everyday play activities, such as when they ice biscuits to take home for

their family. The childminder places a strong focus on prompting children's early language skills. She listens carefully to what children say, extending their vocabulary through conversation.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder places a strong focus on children's safety and children learn how to keep themselves safe through a variety of activities. She takes children on outings within the local community. Children benefit from these social experiences where they learn more about the world around them. They are physically active, walking and spending time in the garden, on the beach or in parks. The childminder is careful to follow parents' wishes about children's care and daily routine. She recognises when children are tired and settles them for a nap, so they wake refreshed and ready to enjoy their play. She adopts a consistent, fair approach which has a positive impact on children's behaviour.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and engage in age-appropriate activities. The childminder gives children time to work things out for themselves and develop their own ideas. They confidently manage their self-care needs and enjoy helping with simple tasks. They acquire the key skills, knowledge and attitudes that prepare them for nursery or school.
