This provision is good

 The childminder regularly reflects on her practice. She evaluates her practice effectively to consider what works well and areas for development. She gains the views of parents and children to help her in this process and makes changes that benefit children.  Children make good progress. The childminder supports children's early mathematical skills effectively. For example, children enjoy solving problems, sorting shapes and colours, and use mathematical language in their play.  Children have close bonds with the childminder. These close relationships help to develop children's emotional well-being. The childminder provides a caring and nurturing environment. Children are confident and motivated to explore and learn.  The childminder regularly shares her observations and assessments of children's learning with their parents and other settings children attend. They work together to provide a consistent approach to children's care and learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not obtain detailed information from parents about children's achievements at home to help her plan for their learning more precisely from the start.  Children do not have sufficient opportunities to explore the creative resources and express their ideas freely.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 gather detailed information about what children can already do when they first start at the setting to help inform planning from the outset  create more opportunities for children to use their imaginations, explore and express their creative ideas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children playing.  The inspector considered the views of parents as part of the inspection.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at convenient times during the inspection and evaluated the impact of activities offered for children's learning.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation including children's learning journals and the childminder's policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child to protect their welfare. She carries out risk assessments effectively to help keep children safe. The childminder has made some good improvements since her last inspection. For example, she has organised resources to make them more easily accessible for children to make choices about their play. The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date and develops her skills. For example, she has attended training that has helped her to provide more opportunities for children to practise their early writing skills.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder enhances children's physical coordination well. For example, she encourages children to develop spatial awareness as they fit puzzle pieces together and place them onto wooden pegs. The childminder helps children to learn to coordinate and control their bodies, for example, as they move and jump to music. The childminder uses her assessments of children's development to track their progress. She works closely with parents, sharing their child's achievements and next steps to help ensure they progress well. The childminder is skilled at extending children's learning. For example, she introduces the names of shapes, such as 'triangle', and helps children to recognise the names of colours in their play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder gives children plenty of encouragement and praise for their efforts and achievements. Children feel valued and behave well. The childminder helps children learn about places and people in the local community. For example, she encourages their developing social skills such as playing and exploring with other children at the park. The childminder teaches children skills that help to keep them safe. For example, she involves them in regular fire drills to learn how to evacuate the home safely in an emergency.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy learning and develop a good range of skills that prepare them well for their future learning. Children learn to eat healthy foods and use cutlery independently, for example, they learn how to use a fork to eat pieces of melon. Children are confident and explore the environment making decisions about their play. They learn to solve problems such as how to fit the zoo animals into a trailer. Children develop a good range of vocabulary, for example, as they learn and sing new songs.
