This provision is good

 The childminder carries out thorough risk assessments, in her home and for outings, to help ensure children's safety. She carefully supervises children's play and encourages them to investigate the different resources available.  The childminder is committed to developing her professional knowledge. She regularly attends training courses and uses what she learns to help build further on her teaching skills. For example, she encourages children to learn new words, helping them develop good communication and language skills.  Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. They form good emotional attachments and enjoy each other's company.  The childminder has developed effective ways to communicate with parents and they share important information about children's learning progress.  The childminder evaluates her provision and sets targets to help her identify where to make improvements to her practice or the outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently enable young children to make choices about the resources they want to use for themselves.  The childminder does not provide a wide variety of activities and resources to enable children to build further on their understanding of the world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 give young children more opportunities to make their own choices during their play  build on opportunities to extend children's awareness of the natural world around them.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children playing in the childminder's home.  The inspector looked at children's records, a selection of policies and procedures and other documentation.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents' from their written comments.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of her responsibilities, such as how many children she can care for and when to notify Ofsted of changes. She is confident of the procedure to follow when protecting the welfare of children in her care, such as from child protection concerns or extreme believes and views. She has a wide range of policies and procedures, and she uses these to effectively underpin her good practice. She is aware of the importance of working with professionals at other settings to help provide continuity in children's care and learning. When children first start, the childminder finds out relevant information from parents. This helps to identify children's individual needs and routines.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how young children learn. Her knowledge from her childcare qualification helps her identify the potential learning in the activities she provides. For example, children thoroughly enjoy exploring a basket full of many different items and natural materials. The childminder skilfully extends their learning as she uses words describing the size, colour and texture of the objects they choose. The childminder engages children well and she looks at books with them. For example, younger children are immersed in a story about animals and love showing how they know their names. The childminder observes children's learning and monitors the progress they make well. Any gaps in learning are identified and addressed through a variety of activities and experiences.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder offers a gradual settling-in process, allowing children to settle at their own pace. The environment is planned and most resources are well presented and accessible. Younger children are given plenty of cuddles and caring support. They demonstrate how content they are as they chat and laugh happily with the childminder. Healthy lifestyles are supported very well. The childminder makes sure that children have plenty of opportunities for fresh air and exercise, such as going to local parks. Children learn about the wider community and gain valuable social skills, for example, as they visit the library, soft play centres and toddler groups.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress from their starting points. They continue to achieve well and at their expected level of development. They gain good speaking skills, learn mathematical ideas and build on their personal and social development well. For example, they enjoy socialising with other children at local toddler groups and parks. Children are keen and curious learners. They are learning the skills they need for the next stage in their education.
