This provision is good

 Children make good progress. The childminder supports their language and communication skills well. This includes children who are learning English as an additional language. For example she models words correctly and introduces new vocabulary to help children learn the names of objects.  The childminder and her co-childminder act as good role models for children. They speak to the children and each other in a calm, kind and respectful way, helping children to learn how they should behave towards others. Children's behaviour is good.  The childminder provides a stimulating environment that interests children and motivates them to learn. She follows children's interests and plans a good range of activities, which children thoroughly enjoy. For example, she uses a child's interest in vehicles to encourage him to explore technology and put together jigsaw puzzles.  Children are well supported to become independent in their play and in their personal

skills. This helps them to develop the confidence to move on to the next stages in their development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder attends training to update her knowledge but does not make the most of opportunities to enhance her practice to an even higher level.  Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities for children to use and experience numbers.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 target professional development more effectively to develop practice as well as possible  expand on opportunities for children to use and experience numbers to extend their mathematical understanding.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked around the areas used for childminding.  The inspector observed a range of play activities and care routines.  The inspector looked at a sample of documents.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at various points during the inspection.  The inspector talked to the childminder about how she evaluates her provision and jointly evaluated the impact of teaching after viewing activities.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the responsibilities her role entails. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Recent training has helped the childminder to feel confident to recognise potential risks to children's safety and well-being, and take appropriate steps to protect them from harm. The childminder evaluates her provision to identify her strengths and areas for further improvement. Her assessment systems help her to monitor children's development and to set new learning goals to help them progress. The childminder recognises when a child is not achieving as well as they might and provides them with the support they need to close any gaps in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder teaches children well. She understands how they learn and develop, and uses her skills to motivate them. The childminder provides a good balance of activities between those that she organises and those that children choose for themselves. This helps her to ensure children take part in a variety of experiences, where they build on their learning. Children enjoy a range of opportunities to explore and use different media and materials, for example, through arts and crafts activities. They enjoy drawing and painting, and talking about the meanings of the marks that they make.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder and her co-childminder provide a calm and homely environment where children develop a sense of belonging. Children settle well. They quickly develop strong bonds with the adults and other children. The childminder communicates well with parents. She gains a good understanding of each child's needs and interests and caters for these to a high standard. Children are well supported to learn about being healthy. For example, they are provided with healthy and nutritious meals and snacks, which include a good variety of fruits and vegetables. Daily outings to local parks and attractions are well planned and help children to understand the importance of living active lifestyles.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy opportunities to experiment and work out processes for themselves. For example, they solve jigsaw puzzles and find out how to operate electronic toys. This builds their confidence in learning and helps them to become emotionally ready for school. Children make good progress from their starting points.
