This provision is good

 The childminder provides a safe and welcoming environment for children. She works successfully with parents to ensure a smooth settling-in process, and sensitively supports each child's individual needs.  Children enjoy a good range of activities and resources, which the childminder uses to effectively support their development. She skilfully guides and extends children's learning, helping them to make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder supports children's good behaviour well. For example, she uses plenty of praise and positive comments. Children respond well to her calm and consistent approach and their behaviour is good. For example, older children play gently with younger members of the group.  The childminder understands how to support children's emerging independence. Her approval and encouragement help them to develop the confidence to try things out for themselves. This helps them to prepare for the next stages in their development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder attends some training to keep her knowledge up to date, she does not make the most of opportunities to develop her practice to the highest level.  There are limited opportunities for children to develop an understanding of people and communities beyond their own experiences.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 target professional development more effectively to refine and progress teaching practices as well as possible  enhance opportunities for children to learn about people and communities beyond their own experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked around the areas used for childminding.  The inspector observed a range of play activities and care routines.  The inspector looked at a sample of documents.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at various points during the inspection.  The inspector talked to the childminder about how she evaluates her provision.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the requirements of the early years foundation stage. She uses self-evaluation well to reflect on her practice. She identifies her strengths, as well as areas for improvement, and values the information she receives from parents and children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands what to do if she is concerned about the safety or well-being of a child in her care. She recently completed training to help her to understand how to identify children who might be at risk from exposure to extreme views or behaviour. The childminder works well with her co- childminder to make sure that all children receive a consistently high standard of teaching and care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children to find out about their interests and what they can do. She uses this information to assess their development and plan interesting and enjoyable activities, based around what they need to learn next. Children use their imaginations as they explore a range of materials and resources. For example, they use dough to create food for their role-play game. Children are confident in exploring technology. For example they operate electronic cars and explore how to create lights and sounds as they press the buttons on interactive toys. The childminder helps children to develop their language and communication skills. For example, as they look at books together she talks about the pictures and adds noises to capture and maintain the children's interest.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form secure emotional relationships with the childminder, and children of different ages interact and play happily together. They independently explore their environment and feel secure, safe and happy. Children follow good hygiene procedures. For example, they wash their hands before they eat their nutritious lunches. Opportunities for active outdoor play are well planned within the daily routine. Children visit local parks and outdoor spaces, where they exercise and develop their large muscles. They enjoy learning about the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy a wide variety of experiences that cover all areas of learning. They make good progress from their starting points and learn a range of skills to prepare them for the next stages in their learning. For example, babies develop the strength and coordination to take their first steps, while older children explore activities that prepare them for early writing.
