This provision is good

 The childminder provides a homely and welcoming environment where children are happy, relaxed and feel emotionally secure in the childminder's care.  The childminder monitors children's progress well. She provides a range of learning experiences based on children's needs and interests. Children make good progress in relation to their starting points.  The childminder supports the development of children's independence skills well. They are encouraged to make choices in their play and learn to manage their own personal needs.  Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder keeps parents well informed about their children's welfare and learning. They work well together to support children's development.  The childminder regularly reviews her practice and takes effective steps to keep her knowledge up to date. She identifies targets for ongoing improvement that will effectively benefit the outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not provide a wide range of opportunities for children who prefer to learn outdoors.  The childminder does not extend children's mathematical development to help them develop their skills further.

p.1

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children during indoor activities.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector viewed documentation including children's records, policies and the childminder's self-evaluation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps up to date with local child protection procedures through regular training. She has a clear understanding of what to do if she is concerned for children's welfare. The childminder completes daily checks to minimise risks to children's safety and helps children learn how to keep themselves safe. For example, she regularly practises emergency evacuation procedures with the children. The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She uses her knowledge to effectively observe and assess children's development. This helps her to quickly identify and address any gaps in learning. The childminder builds good relationships with parents from the start. She offers support and guidance to parents to help their children make good progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder effectively supports children's learning and engages in their play. Activities are planned based on children's interests, which helps to extend their learning. Children have opportunities to develop their fine-muscle skills and good coordination. For example, they use different tools to create models with dough. The childminder supports children's communication and language skills well. For example, she provides clear instructions, models language and asks questions to initiate discussion.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model for children and supports their good behaviour. Children learn to share, take turns and treat the environment with respect. For example, they happily tidy away toys when finished. The childminder gives lots of praise and encouragement to children, which helps to support their confidence and self-esteem. Children learn about differences and similarities in society. For example, they have opportunities to learn about people and cultures beyond their immediate experiences. The childminder supports children's understanding of healthy lifestyles. For example, children enjoy healthy foods and learn about healthy eating during activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and learn the key skills they need in readiness for school. They develop strong communication skills, and are eager to learn and explore. For example, they listen well and respond positively to instructions. Children enjoy books and are engaged for extended periods of time when reading stories with the childminder. Children have good coordination and their pencil control is developing well. For example, children learn to make marks for a purpose.
